Two bottom brackets in three weeks. Of course they're press fit and both days before races. I don't know how you guys in the PNW do it. We've had rain for the first time in ages and the wear it puts on stuff is through the roof. Alternatively, it shows how spoiled I was getting 2X the life out of these because they never had exposure to anything but an occasional stream crossing and dust.

Something about the fines, maybe that they don’t get washed away like in places where it rains regularly. The mud there is extra terrible.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Got to love getting charged by off leash dog dog with a prong collar during a night ride. Some sort of Rottweiler/pitbull came charging through the woods at me last night. Came tearing through the brush growling and barking. Couldn’t see it until it was right on me. Luckily a yell and swerving the bike at it caused a retreat. Heard the owners down on the road yelling for it. Guess they thought since it’s dark out no one would be out riding or walking their dogs and they could let Cujo run free. If your dog needs a prong collar, it probably shouldn’t be off leash.

I got chased by Sheep herder dogs last week. Came up on a big herd in a meadow next to the road. Spotted two dogs laying on the road. They seemed pretty chill, looked at me and didn't seem to give a fuck. Then a third one on the far side of the field saw me and charged all the way over. Got the first two all sparked up and they were all snapping and growling at me. Never made contact, but they didn't back off for a minute or two. They almost herded me right off the road. Had to struggle to stay upright on the soft shoulder. Big alsatians.

Came across the shepherd higher up on the trail. He gave me thumbs up. I gave him thumbs down along with an earful. He either didn't speak English or was pretending not to.

no body told you about the probelms getting staff, the great reset, yadayada so were you asleep during Covid and all the fallout ?

I often buy extra when i see it cuz maybe I won't see it again for awhile, shortages in a fucked up supply chain, even if they got it they don't have staff to put it out

fortunately we gots a college where a whole shwack of south azns are going to school and working at safeway, also run into russians serbs ect

off course a rant by definition can be completely off base and entirely due to emotions

Motherfucking hornets trying to ruin a Friday night shuttle ride. My buddy kicked a branch off the trail that must have had a nest underneath. I got stung 6 times, 5 for him. 4 of them are under my hip pack, that's gonna be annoying for a bit.

What is with the price of used bike parts still being astronomical? I’m looking for a lightly used pair of crank brother mallets and PB, Craigslist, OfferUp are all 90% of what I could buy new. Same for wheels, so many used wheelsets listed for the same as what I could buy new.

    Also, anyone holding some mallets?

Good deals come through. The bad deals sit and don’t sell. Right now it feels like there are some bikes and parts that are just sitting on the used sites and clogging up searches.

I’d just buy new Mallets… I know it’s not crank brothers of old, but that’s a wear item. You’ll be thankful you didn’t go used in a year.

Mrs. Mtnjam and I were hiking at Bogus Basin a few weeks ago and had the same thing happen with a border collie, the owner was holding the dog while I was walking past and then for whatever stupid reason the owner decided to let the dog go and sure enough it goes after my wife. Well, she was used to dealing with aggressive dogs when she used to drive ditches with watermasters on her previous job as a water engineer. She poked the dog with her hiking pole which made the owner of the dog snap at us saying it wasn't appropriate to poke a dog with a pole, I snapped back and said it's not FINE to have your aggressive dog come after my wife. WTF dog owners, do better.

I also find that a good swift kick to the aggressive dog helps once and while too.

I thought I was upgrading by purchasing the Dart. Those things suck! Maybe they work on a tread puncture, but they don't do shit on the sidewall. Thankfully I still carry bacon.

yup a dog will react to your agression and decide this is not a good idea, if dog is off leash its between you and the dog, if owner doesn't like it tough

If my dog harasses you I whole-heartedly endorse giving him a swift kick in his non-existent nuts. Saves me the trouble.

IMO they're iffy on tread punctures as well. Tried one on a pretty normal sized tread puncture this week with no success, old school bacon strip worked, trimmed it and rode it pretty hard this morning. I have some left so will keep trying them until I'm out but don't plan on replacing them. Bacon strips also pack so much smaller in my toolbag for another major plus.

Had a medium sized dog off leash nip my thihh on trail few years back, squirted him in the face with a face full of water from my bottle and owner was pissed at me. Took all I had not to escalate the situation, didn't hold back telling him to get fucked.

Of all the tasks of bike building and repair I’ve done over the last 8 years of working on my own bike : installing a new brake lever / and spring is THE worst task of all. Period. Full stop. I’ve done some successfully. Today I said fuck it and riding sans spring til I try again in 7 months when my blood pressure is down.
Do I detect a lot of anger flowing around this place? Kind of like a pubescent volatility, some angst, a lot of I'm-sixteen-and-angry-at-my-father syndrome?

    fuck that noise.

Damn, guys, I have had great experiences with Dart plugs fixing absolutely crazy things that I thought I would have to walk out of. The key I think is fresh Stan’s, they supposedly create a chemical bond when exposed to the sealant.
I carry both just in case, but I haven’t had to use bacon once in about three years.

Had a dog come at me barking and nipping. I instinctively clipped out of my pedal to get my ankle out of biting range, and the owner registered the clip-out motion as me trying to kick her dog. She said "yeah, kick the little turd. I'm sick of his shit". I felt bad and started to explain but quickly decided it wasn't worth the effort.

It would take a lot for me to kick a dog. Bikes are weird and scary and it's not their fault their owners suck. Luckily I've had pretty good luck with a pointed "NO!"

Most of the time I just stop. They usually have no idea what to do then. I have never been bitten doing this.

Had a fun ride on some local trails yesterday. After about 40 minutes of pedaling we get to the top of a pretty fun trail that is functionally downhill. Very rare for people to go up it. If they do, they are huffing and puffing. We start making our way down. Up ahead suddenly my buddy has to go off the trail to avoid running into a fat ass on a moped who also has his fat ass girl with him on her mooed, both just flying uphill in boost mode. Didn’t bother to say anything to my buddy or pull to the side. On a trail where mopeds are illegal. They could care less. But they were probably on there way to go build trail or save some endangered species or have fat ass sex in the woods so, more power to them.

But, fortunately for us, this never, ever happens and has no chance of affecting our local access or trail building.
