Too steep and your hand won't be able to push against the bar, and you'll compensate with more gripping. Too flat and the bend at the wrist will restrict tendons/muscles/blood flow. You just gotta play around with it depending on how the rest of your bike is set up and the trails you ride. There's a good YouTube video by Aaron Gwin talking through the process of setting up cockpit, and I find it's pretty intuitive to do it that way.
That video deserves to be in the padded room. Laughed my face off.
Lifting weights does not seem to help. I am no expert on arm pump; however, I think arm pump is considered a form mild compartment syndrome. Thus, increasing muscle mass may worsen arm pump.
Tendinitis can be misdiagnosed as arm pump. Rest, nsaids, and ice are the treatment.
Gyro ball helped me.
Most importantly is technique. Relaxed forearms is crucial.
I think most uci dh riders have brakes angled down about 15 degrees. I think jordi stated this in one of the dialed episodes.
Gwinns cockpit setup video will help too.
I used to get horrible arm pump / tendinitis kayaking. Honestly, still have to be very careful to this day about not overdoing the forearms in any activity. Thank goodness I'm not single.
Hopefully, it will be helpful if not completely incorrect.

Over the years I had tennis elbow 5 times from WW kayaking I think if you have to grip a shaft constantly instead of it just being in your hand it wilI cause you problems,
I switched to a werner with a small diameter shaft and haven't had any re-ocurrance

Some things definitely made it better / worse.
Not wearing gloves no matter how cold. Pogies if absolutely frigid.
Smaller diameter shaft for my small hands.
A paddle with some flex. I had a fluid tech hookup for awhile. Incredibly precise paddle but ultimately too stiff. AT paddle was easier on my body including my shoulders, a bit maple syrupy in feel though... however, I broke the AT and went to fluid. I might have broken a fluid too, I don't remembered. I did lose one on upper cherry once though. ...rambling.

Yeah neoprene gloves made the grip circumference bigger which is harder on the elbow so i always used pogies , too long of a paddle with blades that are too big could also fuck up the shoulders, after 39 yrs of paddling I don't thro anything overhand and just moving the arm overhead feels iffy
Werner used to have a fit guide that would hang on the paddle display at your shop with 3 different sized hand outlines for you to put your hand on/ check , small hand was definatly small shaft but if yer hand was on the cusp (me) they recommended small shaft and of course regular shaft for everbody else
pretty much everyone around here uses Werner, yeah a lot of the AT paddles broke I think cuz of a resin rich layup, and they had big shafts I had one which I sold cuz it was hurting me,
so wtf does this have to do with biking well if you have trouble with arms and hands maybe your grips are too big ?
so if somebody sez " yeah XYZ grip is the best ever " you gotta ask for whom
I go with ODI lock-ons which are super slim

I've been riding the esi extra chunkys and think I'm going to go down to regular chunky next time i get around to replacing them. Might even cut my bars down a touch.
The xc hardtail has narrower bars so it would mostly just be to make the two bikes a little more similar. And I would only go to 780 from 800 so not much of a change. And I thought about doing this months ago and still haven't bothered.
Bike riding pretty good after spending a whole shitload of money on it. Except I noticed the rebound adjuster on my fork has somehow broken off. That looks like a really annoying and fiddly part to replace. Well, maybe I can just unscrew the lower adjuster deal on the damper without fully taking it apart and dealing with the top cap plug and bleeding it and all that shit I dunno.
There's nothing better than sliding down snow, flying through the air
This is less of a rant, and more of a "things that amuse me." But as sort of a rant, there are a lot of extremely uncoordinated people whizzing around on these fucking things.

Haven't seen those yet, but we've got all sorts of other electric mobility devices on our trails....off road one-wheels, e-razrs, throttle street ebikes, and of course surrons everywhere. The surron riders are starting to put real moto tires on and mod the bikes for significantly more power. Of course the rangers can't catch them. And they are the biggest assholes when you tell them their motorcycles aren't allowed.
I saw a kid on a scooter in WA the other day hanging a foot out on a corner at an intersection. Looked like Sam Hill 🤣
There's a guy in Flag with a full suspension e-scooter. Beefy tires. I chatted him up while waiting for a light. Wasn't sure how much travel he had but his rig is pretty zippy.
I also saw a guy on one of the forward facing electric unicycle jobbers riding up the AZT right below Snowbowl. Just had a good chuckle since I've only ever seen those on bikepaths. Full stormtrooper.
Further proof of the 8th law of nature - if it moves, we’ll race it.
There some content floating around of strider races; fully organized, jersey’ed, etc…

Equestrians that think it's ok to empty all of the manure from their horse trailer on to the trailhead parking lot.
Swapping around sets of brakes but it turns out my wife’s “urban” bike has internally routed cables front and rear where the holes are only as big as a hose.
So unlike her hardtail that I just finished with, there’s no way to add or remove a hose without cutting off the barb/olive and removing the nut.
Who designs shit this way? Now I have to find parts for 2 different brands (because everyone has their own barb designs) and fully bleed 4 brakes as there’s no way I’m going to get away with a quick lever bleed at this point.
I think that's ridiculous as well. I know it's contentious for some, but I love my Transition bike's external rear brake hose. I have only had the bike a few months and I've moved things around a couple times already.
If you unscrew the barb from the lever and cut it close to the barb, I'd wager you can still do a lever bleed. Keep the cut end of the hose pointed roughly upwards as you pull it through the bike. I've done Shimanos three times and Codes once like this and never had a squishy lever afterward.
I bought a ski pass that came with bike park days that I planned to use at Lee Canyon's little park. They just opened up a green trail and I was hoping that my son would be able to ride it. A week after the green trail opened, Hurricane Hillary came through and apparently dropped almost 10 inches of rain on the place and completely washed out the place. Now they're closed for the summer season and will have to do some scrambling to get ready for winter. Dammit. Shouldn't have saved my days.
I’ve been rough in shoes lately. Pulled a lace through an eyelet of some Shimano AM7s, replaced w ME702 which have been great but tonight on a ride bumped foot on the buckle and it snapped the buckle. Hopefully found some replacement parts as it sucks braking shoes after 5 rides for a bit of a fluke
