Hell, no point in even teaching hand writing, they all use keyboards, and even those will be obsolete soon.

Great ideas, but schools aren't going to teach it all, or even a portion, so learning begins at home. We had excellent public schools for our kids, but even they didn't provide what we wanted, so we provided it through alternate means. Kids took music lessons, played team sports, did some dance (not their thing), did 4H, among other things. You are your kids best advocate and education begins and ends at home, school just helps you in between.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Exactly. It's all they need to know. Oh and evidently how to eat cheese puffs, I forgot that part on the first couple pages

There is no consistency. In our school district of 4 towns, one school teaches Spanish from K right through 8th grade, so when they hit HS they are so far ahead of the other towns. It throws everything off.

Public schooling is an incredibly complex issue, but I'm sure we can solve it here on tgr.

I see many people these days who would strongly benefit from a background in epistemology, for example.

Then there's love, common sense, community, self awareness, recognizing narcissists, misogynists and other sociopaths, not to mention waiting your turn, asking nicely and grace.

Schools need to teach more hard science - for example, how planes can take off from treadmills

How did calligraphy come up before civics?

I feel very lucky with the program my daughter is in... Highly flexible for adapting to non-grade level coursework and they teach all the basics... She's been working her way thought books on cursive handwriting since 2nd grade - and every day includes dedicated math, science, language arts, and history instruction. Also 45 minutes of gym and 35 minutes of outdoor recess every day. And they're great about letting her play hooky on pow days. They also do mandatory community service beginning in 6th grade. For public school in a small rural community, it's a pretty incredible program.

Every basic HS econ class should teach 50% intro to micro and macro, and 50% personal finance.

This. Tom and Ray Maliacci (Car Talk) once went on a long rant about little league baseball. Premise: throw out a bunch of bats, balls and gloves and walk away, make the kids figure it out from there. Parents were allowed to show up only in the event of hemorrhagic bleeding, unconsciousness for more than five minutes, or compound fractures

    To earlier points:

    - It will be a cold day in hell when they take my Cheez-It's from me.

    - Maybe not cursive so much, but basic penmanship. It sets you apart and shows that you care - something so few of today's youth/millenials know anything about. (Cue handwriting tales of Docs from Old Goat and general millenials defensiveness in 3, 2, 1.. )

Yes. I dont have a big issue with someone blocking a shoulder from potential a-holes looking to skip. But blocking a 2nd lane before the lanes merge is just being a premature merge enthusiast. Aka, a dick.

+1 on epistemology. Its absence in large sections of pop culture poses a threat to the republic. See: Palin, Trump

I thought it was as simple as seeing who has a social media presence at all, and distancing yourself from those people.
