Solar Eclipse 2017

Just heard some news bimbo talking about cows lying down while the eclipse was happening. Not an expert but I live in ranch country and see them lying down all the time and I'm pretty sure there's not an eclipse going on when I see it. In fact, if they are lying down don't they get up when it starts getting dark and head to the barn?

If they have a barn they might head to it if that is where they are fed at night otherwise they will stay put and keep grazing.

Cows lay down to chew their cud which is important and has little to do with time of day or celestial happenings.

Cows need to be comfortable and relaxed to chew their cud, and usually lie down to do it. They can lie down for very long periods of time, not to sleep, but just to chew their cud. Cud-chewing cows are generally healthier. With a well-functioning rumen, cows will digest more of their diet and produce more milk.

Took a friend 3 hours to go from Salem to Halsey (40 miles) on the 5.

Great shot...took 1.5 hours to drive 20 miles north back to the Portland area from down by Aurora. Drive there this morning took 40 minutes. Seeing totality was amazing.

Loving the pictures of the leader of the United States of America staring into the sun without eye protection. Reminds me of Jimmy Wichard on King of the Hill. "They say he fried his brain one day just staring at the sun... 'course, he couldn't have been to smart to do that in the first place. Kind of a chicken and egg thing."

Traffic for me was way better than expected. It took me less than five hours to drive from south of Government Camp back to Seattle. I drove down to Oregon on Saturday and the entire weekend didn't seem any busier than a normal summer weekend.

Took I-84 out to Baker City from PDX and traffic was a non-issue. Drove to the top of a mountain south of town and camped last night which we followed up with 2+ minutes of totality this morning. So surreal and beautiful... Once in a lifetime experience for sure. Anything less than totality is like dry humping.

Wow.

Ten miles north of JH was the spot to be and there we were. We saw stars in the sky. Eclipse shadows were incredible.

We dropped about 20° F. Zero clouds.

Wind was eerily still and the all the birds stopped chirping.

A very memorable day.

More people than I expected in bumfuck nowhere BLM land in central WY. Still no problem finding a good viewing spot, though. Heavy volume on 287 but fast, a minor traffic backup in Three Forks, barely noticeable on I-80.

Totally worth all the driving. It was an amazing experience and the kid loved it. A fun adventure and saw some neat country we never would have gone to otherwise.

Anyhow the family of goat hearders directly below in the wash apparently didn't know a thing about it. They went ape shit as did the 100 or so goats.

We saw very few people in the place that we chose to camp and view the eclipse, I can only imagine how deserted it is on an average weekend. It was smokey yesterday for the big show, which almost made it even more surreal. It was even cooler than I thought it was going to be and the 2 minutes 12 seconds went by very quickly.

The drive home sucked. We knew we were in for it when we hit a traffic jam in Mackay Idaho. A 5 hour drive took almost 8. I think waiting around camp for another couple of hours after would've helped a lot as we seemed to be right with the surge. It looked like more than 50% of the cars on the road were from CA, and 50% of those cars thought the fastest way through barely moving traffic was to weave in and out of cars cutting off everyone.

Got what I prepped the offspring for... anti-climatic.

ThorLabs; headquartered in newton, sussex financed a telescope build and live feed for a summer intern and scout in our troop. About 1/2 a troop with parents in tow, we gathered to see 78%.

Sunny as could be expected with altostrattus at 10-14k. with 6m remaining in comes this compressed cumulus that was at least 10min wide and squashed the day.

Arc helmet over gas won the day.

This doesn't take away from the experience at totality. All the tech since my first in 70' hasn't altered the experience either.
