NOAA is predicting relatively little storm surge in Miami compared to further up the coast.
    Not looking that way here:

A direct hit by Matthew, he said, could lead to "massive destruction" on a level unseen since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Voluntary and mandatory evacuations in the state stretch from Miami to the Florida-Georgia border.

My old neighbors on the west side fled the state after Andrew. They said that was it for them - no more hurricanes so they packed up and moved to earthquake country.

The center of the storm is already north of Miami and the strongest winds should be coming into Miami over land, so there should be less of a storm surge.

I got out of the first day of my senior year of high school due to Andrew. Day after lollapalooza 2. Surfed the inside of Port Canaveral...

Family is all accounted for. They've seen some pretty big rain bands so far, neighbors oak tree is down but they still have power. My nephew in law works at Jess Parrish Medical in Titusville and they went to code yellow lock down to ride it out so he can't leave. Not as many hurricane parties going on for this one. Facebook is terrifying me.

One of my coworkers asked me if my folks were expecting any problems from the hurricane. I replied "No, they live in Texas." She replied, "I know, but I thought maybe they would get some of the wind or rain." I had no response to that and slowly backed away.

My family all check in safe. Lots of trees down and no power. The eye stayed offshore of Brevard County so they literally dodged a bullet. Offshore winds now and pictures from Cocoa Beach show perfect 15 ft peelers. I know some guys going surfing right now. Enjoy that paddle out!

Ugh. Awful. Who was the clown I heard yesterday saying Savannah wasn't on the coast? Probably the brother of the girl that was unaware GA was on the coast.

Good news though, my buddy on Tybee tells me Huca Poos is still open for those looking for a beer.

News says 30' waves hitting Daytona. That has to be loud as shit.

Psh, this doesn't even register as a storm if the Waffle House is still open. You know the shit has really hit the fan when they shut down.

Very lucky Miami did not take a direct hit. That place floods at high tide. Read an article that said Miami will be the next atlantis 40 yrs

^^^Nice, I went looking for surf cams on the northern Florida beaches, and they were all down...go figure.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Jim Cantore just mentioned he heard (not confirmed) that there was a lot of structural damage on HHI!
