    Commuter Jacket

Of all the activities I participate in, my commuter setup is the most lacking. Funny because I do it the most too. My ride to work this morning was in the low 40's and got me thinking that more inclement is likely in my future.

I currently have ~10 minute ride to work or school from my apartment. I own a 2 layer shell that is way overbuilt for lift-served skiing that I will only use on the bike if there is serious precipitation, otherwise the amount I sweat negates any benefits from the shell. I am under the impression that a softshell would be best for my uses, however I would like to use whatever I purchase on warm ski days as well.

I would personally prefer a jacket that is unlined, so I would be comfortable commuting in the summer rain, has a hood, and a spacious pocket, preferably on the back, and an athletic fit. Anyone have good recommendations for jackets or companies to check out? No cheapo shells please, not what I am looking for.

Been a devout commuter for decades and my current commute is 20 miles each way, 12 on pavement, 8 on dirt. I keep it super simple, as it should be. Under 60 degrees, cover the knees and wear a light cycling shell over short sleeved jersey. Under 50 and I wear a long sleeved mid weight wicking layer under shell. Under 40 and it's winter soft shell cycling jacket with bibbed wind proof front tights. That jacket gets me down into the single digits F with added layers underneath. Rain? If it's warm enough to rain then it ain't that cold. Under 40 and it's the winter soft shell for rain. Above and it's the other shell. No rain gear or gore tex as we're 80% water anyway.
