I do not like about new bikes and the low bb is the pedal striking. I've gotten used to normal riding and limited my pedal strikes now, but many (most) of our corners are not bermed and a favorite thing of mine is to pedal through flatter corners picking up or maintaining speed.

So yeah, mtb engineers work on that for me

get a bike with bigger wheels, and less slack angles.

and maybe shorter cranks, thinner pedals, and stiffer suspension

I have xt pedals which are pretty thin and 29 tires. Suspension is perfect for my riding. I think it's just is what it is. I'm not going back...just nitpicking.

I have to disagree. I do admit it takes some technique not to hit stuff but modern bikes destroy rocky, rooty, real MTB trails.

I was being cheeky. I agree that new bikes slay the chunk, but a huge percentage of the riding population that ride these new wonder rigs run away from the rough and gnarly vs making use of the tech that's under their butt. Pedal striking is way more common on the new machines so it seems.

I had a nasty pedal strike a couple weeks ago that was completely my fault. Went from about 8mph to 0 immediately and almost nutted myself on the stem.

Luckily it was on a transition to uphill so I wasn't gaining momentum.

True, but much more often with my '16 vs my '12 cc bike...same corners I've always been riding. Pedaling through corners is how you control and power through...it's one of the best feelings when riding imo. Again, I'm nitpicking here and would much rather stay with my SC HT then go back to my CC bike. Although, certain areas that I don't ride often, the old bike would be fine. Need a quiver

Pedaling through corners is how you control and power through...it's one of the best feelings when riding imo.

When the terrain demands it I don't disagree. But, any time the bike is leaned over and your inside pedal is at 6 o'clock you're playing with fire.

Yeah, but you're talking .5mm and I question how much of difference would that really make. And on the other side, how much do you lose on leverage power and you'll be pumping more rpms. It may be minimal for both points.

5mm paired with a higher volume tire could be a winning combo.
