Which State has produced the best music?

The rules: Doesn't matter where someone was born. What matters is where they made a name for themselves. For example Bob Dylan counts for New York, Muddy Waters for Illinois and Steve Earle for Texas. Post videos to make you case, preferably live performances.

Edit: Go ahead and make an argument for Canada or even Austria if you're brave. I'll take Dylan and Bille Holiday over Mozart any day.

Those States mentioned above happen to be my top three:

    New York:

    Texas:

    Illinois:

FWIW, Steve Earle didn't really make a name for himself until he moved to Nashville. The video you posted was when he was relatively unknown outside that region of Texas. I'm a big fan but Earle got recognition and hit his stride once he moved to Nashville. That would be like claiming Dylan for MN or Muddy Waters for MS. The same could be said for Freddie King, he's from Texas but made his name in Chicago. Let's have some consistency here.

    Wrong forum JONG!

You're off to a strong start with NY and TX. Music to listen too while I do these bids. Thanks,

Only if there was a forum for music... Mods can we get on that?

Obvious answers include New York, California, and Tennessee

Lots of good music out of Boston over the years.

Quite a bit from Detroit too.

This thread would be better if it was cities not states imo.

Dylan will always be from Minnesota, Hendrix and grunge from Washington and Zappa from LA (despite being born in Baltimore). Charlie Parker is from Kansas City, Miles from St. Louis (Alton, Ill technically), etc.

That's why this thread is stupid. Hendrix is from Seattle but made a name for himself as a sideman first in NY and then a frontman in London. Many of the others in the original post had their foundation set in Texas, Mississippi etc but didn't really hit their stride and become know until moving to Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, NY, LA etc..

Figure there would be much arguing about where people are from. Just go ahead and argue about it.

I agree that Steve Earle is particularly hard to assign to any State. But:

And when Dylan moved to New York he told people he was from Colorado.

Steve Earle isn't hard to assign, he's a Texas singer/songwriter that got his start there and had success once he mover to Nashville. Just like Freddie King got his start in TX but was a relative unknown until he started playing the blues clubs of Chicago.

As for Texas, "...it don't matter who's in Austin, Bob Wills is still the king..."

I'd argue Sweden but I like more prog rock/metal (Opeth) and doom metal (Candlemass) vs black metal (Gorgoroth.)

Michigan is a strong contender and has something for everyone: Motown, garage rock (MC5, Iggy/Stooges, White Stripes), electronica (Detroit techno), heartland rock (Seger), hip hop (Eminem).
