"Bear, Please Stop Eating My Kayak"

Thought about posting this in the random NSFW thread, but, well, I'm at work.

To be fair, given where she was, it sounds like her very distressed tone wasn't unwarranted. I mean, if I was just chilling on a lakeshore near home and this happened, I think I'd be pissed (that's a nice touring boat), but I'd also be pretty amused too that he just shrugged off the pepper and chowed down on the plastic.

If someone could make a jacket of those three things it would no doubt be the most popular and prized item in all of your closets.

I paddled one of those Delta's last month over in Haida Gwai, NICE boat to paddle made out of thermo-formed plastic which slides pretty good over barnacle covered rocks and is 10lbs lighter than my old necky SO if a 17' Delta comes up cheap i could be all over it

OTOH the bears seem to eat this thermo formed plastic shit up?

IMO she should have just manned up and got out the duct tape eh?

She should have not planted the idea in the bear's mind. Obviously he/she was listening to her and once the pepper spray came out he/she knew what it's revenge would be.

Supposed she had to swim out to some passing boat to get out of there.

That's what she reportedly said in the comment section of her youtube post.

I think I would have posted the video with slightly different audio. What song to pick, hmmm . . .

There's a sailboat right there. Highly doubt someone just left it there, so they are probably aboard. Also the board walkway makes me think that she wasn't exactly in the wilderness.

It was cool to see how much the bear recoiled from the spray though

We almost always carry spray with us hiking and such but have been lucky enough to never have to use it

Maybe if she cried just a little more the bear might have left..

What would you guys have done in a similar situation, say the bear was ruining your kayak and theyre were no other boats around. In actual wilderness with no way home but that kayak? What do you do? Id like to know. Say you have two bottles of spray, can you charge a bear with two cans of spray blasting his face, or is that just a good way to provoke getting mauled?

If the pepper spray doesn't work, start pleading. I don't think charging is ever advised unless its attacking someone else. I'd go with the rock throwing/noise making, the only thing her shrill would intimidate is a nice single jewish man.

IRL that's "Defense of life or property" if that bear shipwrecks you, and you're legally justified in summarily executing the animal before he can accomplish that (not afterwards for revenge).

Realistically, you don't want to kill or injure the animal, and this woman missed a fine chance to blast that bear in the face with pepper spray, thus educating the bear and making that little USFS Public Use Cabin a little safer for the next yakker. She was soft, and the bear knew it...

Flares will set them running every time, but you have to advance on the bear with a flare in your hand. Don't do that.

    What would you do?

If yelling don't cut it, I'd put a 1.25-oz slug from my 870 Marine Magnum whistling by his ear or kicking up dirt in his face. 99.99999% of bears will light out with that.
If I have to shoot him, then I'll break down his mobility first. DLP is a mandatory investigation before the State decides it was warranted. Nothing to be taken lightly.

I'd do my best not to bleat and squeal like injured prey. Thats for damn sure.

Anyone know if theres more video?

I friggen love bears. I seem to cross paths with them more often than Id like tho, 2 live action accounts in just the past 2 weeks. Theres a big guy out on the backside of heavenly (i think his name is Lou, hes local), but I just found out hes pretty chill and terrified of humans. Hes like 700 lbs tho and much larger than many of the brown bears in yellowstone.. My brother in law has some good papparazzi photos of him taking a bath in the small man made lake on heavenlies nevada side.. And then I almost smoked one with my car, it just sprinted out in front of my car in south lake tahoe. Whats funny is that it was around the same time somebody posted a video of a big black bear under their backyard deck in south lake, probably wasnt the same bear tho..

Is it me or are the black bears in Tahoe massive? The ones ive seen in north lake are massive as well.

She says she swam to that boat and eventually got rescued. It's in Berg Bay, a fairly remote area near Wrangell. I thought it was a different Berg Bay near Glacier Bay (still fairly remote), but then I read her say that she was kayaking from Ketchikan to Petersburg, so that wouldn't make sense.

I was in an office and someone was playing this. Seriously the most annoying audio I have ever heard.

I would go inside close the door and wait for the bear to leave cuz there is lots to eat out there on the north coast that guy looked pretty good in fact most bears out there look fat and happy compared to interior bears who may have a lot more trouble surviving
