Cool My conversation with Bode.. Now with Picture

I'll try to keep a long story short. I thought this was pretty funny.

Went up to Bretton Woods to party with some friends of mine from St. Anton who were in town to ski in the "Bode Fest" charity event this weekend. I was not on a team so I had my touring gear, Head Monster im85 with freerides, thinking I might get some on Mt. Washington or whatever.

Friday night I wander up to the bar and run into my wife's cousin who has a team of hot racers but one of them has bailed. He asks me to race for him the following day. I say sure but explain the gear situation so not to expect much. No worries and I'm in!

Next morning I'm registering and figure out that there are some pretty serious racers here, waxing stations and lots of Spyder suits. I throw on my EMS wind pants over my shorts and soft shell and head for the top getting lot's of bizzare looks at my sticks.

At the start every team got there photo taken with Bode. I slide in right next to Bode and the dialogue is as follows:

    H-man: "Hi Bode"

Bode: (looks down at H-man's ski's) "Dude, those are powder skis."

H-man: (looks Bode in the eyes) "Dude, I know."

    Bode: (Smirks and laughs)

All in all concerning the competion, I think I did pretty well. Bode threw down a 21.10 (guy is truly a beautiful skier when he is in control), H-man 25.10.

    I'll take it.

4 seconds to Bode on fatties AND touring boots (I assume), that's not bad really. I can't imagine any of the 'serious guys' got much closer than 2 seconds. Some real boots and race skis to give some more confidence to charge and you probably could have cut that in half too.

Ha, that is pretty funny with you on the IM77's (or whatever they are) and your regular ski clothing. Also a little funny that Bode actually wore the suit, wonder if he (or someone from Atomic) waxed, too?

There were all kinds of tech dudes from Atomic at this thing. I'm sure that he got the regular ski treatment. Actually, a couple of the local guys actually beat him by a few hundreths.

I was at that thing the snow was great I arrived too late for registering. My 6 year old so wanted to see Bode and get a poster singed. Funny thing is I know some ppl who had grown up skiing with him and they say he is a kool guy but, he did'ent even talk to my child just singed Bode she went back and had her googles singed as well same thing anyway when I go to ski movie openings and skiers form the movie are there when you get something singed they ask your name and seem a whole lot nicer. Not that Bode needs to be nice but as ski services director. Also there were a few bbts kids there with a dorm parent and the dorm parent wanted to get a racing gate singed which he but he went back to have Bode also put his last name on it and Bode asked him if he knew any other Bodes and he would not singed his last name. But yeah what a great day of skiing stated to teach the kid how to ski switch cool to watch.

classic thread - love the ad lib from the peanut gallery.

So Bode's a world champ with a world champ ego. Big surprise there. It still won't garnish watching him take the silver in the combined at Snowbasin. Unbelievable.

From now on I will simply be known as "Tipp."

What a egocentric bastard. You could tell how he was sliding more and more toward the darkside in each week's segment of "On the Bus w/Bode" on OLN last season.

I saw some video of him at the US Ski team training camp last summer in S. America and he looked chilled out and relaxed. He was generally goofing off and having a good time talking to tourists and training. He looked totally different at the end of the season, and I think after an intense 8 month season he was just burned out. It seems like he just really likes to ski and if he happens to win a few races and make some money along the way, all the better. But it's obvious that all of the media and sponsor bullshit drives him nuts. Unless you have spent a lot of time with him I wouldn't be so quick to judge.
And what is the obsession with getting an autograph? I can understand having him sign a gate to hang in the lodge to inspire kids, but other then that I don't understand why people need to validate the fact that they met someone by getting them to sign something that is just going to sit on a shelf in a closet. I would much rather have an amusing conversation like H-Man's then some scribble on a piece of paper because that shit is real.

That's what I am talking about kids getting autographs. I'm not that interested in racing myself but my 6 year old loves it and thinks that its cool to meet Bode and get a autograph.
