    Dynafit Radical ST question

So I just bought a used pair of Radical ST (1-2 years old) and I'm a little confused about the whole upgrade thing. How do I know if they need it or if they had it? Do I even need to worry about it? I don't have a dynafit dealer nearby (1.5 hours away) or I'd ask them. Advice?

I have had great response by emailing dynafit NA directly with my questions.

There haven't really been that many changes since the inception of the Radical series, basically a reinforcing of the heel housing and switching from an internal anti-rotation pin to an external knob screwed on the brake deployment plate. If you look at the brake pad and there's a black piece of plastic there that keeps the heel from rotating counter-clockwise when the heelpiece is in the 90 degrees to the right (skinning) position, you have the newer version.

Ahh, that helps...I'll check that out. I'm pretty sure it has the plastic piece. Thanks! Reading all the info on Wildsnow got me pretty confused about the upgrades and when they occurred.

The stupid and pointless "forward pressure(?)" spring mechanism on the bsl adjustment screw that wears out and creates previously unknown dynafit heel slop.

Yes, as Brit mentions they added a spring-loaded pivot post 1.5 seasons ago, probably to try to get more repeatable release results when the ski is flexed for potential ISO 13992 certification, but I'm not a fan either. Fortunately they didn't add it to the Speed Radical. If you have it, there's nothing much you can do about it.

Regarding the first generation Radical bindings with the internal brass anti-rotation pin, the fix was to remove it and the spring and install the black plastic blocks on your brake instead. Chances are the pin would already have broken off on its own.

when that pin broke didn't it often break the housing at the same time?

the biggest probelm I had was the screws stripping out of the heel piece and the top peeling off mid turn in 1/2 meter of blower pow which left me spooning a tree, dynafit was good on warranty tho so if this happens i would try for a new heel piece no matter how old the binding is

the new heel piece addresses the problem

They had two versions, a solid one and one with a machined out line where it was supposed to break. The first would break the housing, the second often snapped off and continued to scratch the inside of the housing.

The more recent heel housings also have beefed up plastic around the base of the post, and a gusset above the spring tube.
