Trimmed mine bout two weeks ago now. The garlic is getting there, summer heat and very dry of late. Have to keep an eye on it.

Had two and a half rows that did not grow at all. Knot sure what happened, better test the soil.

I prolly should have done them a week ago. Hope to pickle or ferment the rest. Do you know if scapes freeze well?

Think this may have happened at our friends place down the road. Is there anything one can do to remedy it?

    Thx Bobby!! Never knew that.

I do move them around my small plot year to year but some what limited by space.

I have never frozen the scapes but see no reason why not.

Seconded. Bottom 3 or 4 leaves look turned, and unwatered for about a week? Good to go!

We never watered it. This is our second dryland trial year. Depending on how this looks we are strongly considering buying equipment and planting a few acres next year to grow commercially.

If you don't already have it get a copy of How to grow great garlic. Lot of helpful info especially for commercial growing ops.

Yep, lot of his info is geared toward organic methods for medium to small growers.

Part of my take away is the best return is selling most of what one grows online for seed garlic to
    other growers. Variety is king.

Localy here in the valley a lot of folks lost their garlic especialy, also their perrenials, grass (the new soccer field got hit) because there wasn't enough snow last winter to insulate the plants from freezing, we put 6 " of straw on gf 's garlic and we didn't do so bad but many people lost it all

That's a good plan. Seed garlic is stoopid expensive.

We had a much colder winter than average that got into the single digits for a week or two. Had a little frost damage on the tip of the leaves but nothing too bad. Our biggest issue was weeds due to lack of mulch. The mower broke and I was not able to bag them before the rains hit.

whatever snow fell and then the rain turned to a thick layer of ice which killed everything worst in 30 yars, there are old ladies who put their perennials in so long ago they are no longer in shape/can't afford to replant them

Harvested in June here in Santa Cruz. We don't water them, so they were dry pretty much since April. Was our best year in this location (3 seasons here). Big heads. Mostly cured now, so I'm trimming and packing this week.

We've been growing softnecks, so no scape to time and cut. OTOH, I sure miss eating sautéed scape.

since I learned all the health benefits of garlic, I've been eating it regularly.

Found a black garlic machine online pretty cheap, $15. Gonna order one and give it a go.

My small rice cooker will not stay on keep warm for the many days required. It cut off after about 6 hours.
