DPS Lotus 124 - These Look Fun

My go-to soft snow ski are Billygoats. The deepest days over here are usually restricted to tight tree skiing due to wind, so I was thinking these could be a good option for that kind of use. Plus the light weight would make them easy peasy to tour with. I'm happy with the float of my BG' 95% of the time, but I'm looking for something for those rare days where some more float is desired. How would 184 BG's fare compared to 185 Lotus' strictly float wise?

I don't know if my stature is comparable... I have a 15-16ish 184cm billygoat, wood veneer. I use it to chase my kids through the trees. It's fair to say the BG a heavier version of a pure3 lotus 124 in some regards. But my experience would be lotus 124 is can be more nimble. Not better, just different.
I like them both.
I also have a tour layup 186cm wood veneer that is essentially the 184cm bg just a prior year when the extra 2cm was in the tail. Tour layup helped powder float a little but not much.

Interesting! Which version of the 191 BG? The original 11.12 model or 12.13 onward?

You have like 50# on me, so I don't expect our experiences to be the same but I am curious because IME tip float of the RES is one of the major strengths of the 191 BG.

I think it's a 13 or 14... RES tip. I agree my 50+#s, compounded by super light, fresh, Wasatch pow is where our float experience are probably different.

I love the BG and will continue to buy and rotate in the quiver... but not what I pull out for fresh powder Jan/Feb storm in the Wasatch.

I emailed them to ask:

"That is a great question. Our Foundation models all received Stephan and Peters new Chassis Design. All Foundation models have increased tip engagement as a result. The Foundation Wailer106 and Foundation Wailer112 just went through a slight re-design in August which changed the tip back to the older Pure3 and Tour1 tip shapes, increasing planing and playfullness in deep conditions. The Foundation Wailer99 specifically finds its niche in shallower conditions. I know it can be a little confusing, and I can tell you that there was much deliberation internally on why and which models would be receiving a tip shape re-design.

Bottom line, with the new Chassis Design the skis simply ski better with the new tip shape. They are more intuitive to turn, easier to engage and offer a more versatile ride in a wide variety of conditions.

Last year the 191 Lotus' had a 'regular' tip as opposed to the tapered.....

This has been the case with DPS for quite awhile, it's only their relatively recent expansion into internet sales that has made people aware of it.

so i guess u need a pic of the tip of the ski ur gonna actually buy....and its strage teh blister guy says spooned when there are spoonier and more spatullalike looking tips on view above....im going to japan first time and had pretting much decided id just try the 124 foundation for that - man this is confusing.

As far as I know there never was a Spoon in any foundations. This feature is reserved for Pure3 and Alchemist.

a dps rep at the last OR told me the tour1 specifically had a different tip shape from the regular l124, so in cstefanic’s pics above it looks right (also seen these in the flesh with this tip)

However, the Tour1 looks a lot like Backcountry's Alchemist picture I posted, too.

And yeah, Spooning only affects Pure and Alchemist, not any Hybrids/Foundation/Tour1 that I know of.

FYI I've got the Powderworks version that is referenced at the beginning of the thread (blue w stripe). Kam and their W Canadian rep told me the PW layup is essentially Alchemist. Have size 185 and I'll let it go for $625 - one mount.

Who has skied the Foundation 124? What's it like?

Had a pair of 184s, felt the mount point was 2cm too far forward which made them tip dive and ski like 174s. Felt heavy and slow. Moved back -1.5cm from center (demo Jesters), helped a lot more in planing up on the snow and handling at speed but could never shake the heavy feeling. Sold them and went with Pure3 L120s and was much happier personally.

At $300 on Sierra Trading Post, a steal, what it means is I could try it, for experimentation purposes, and pass it on to a mag for less, without losing too much money. Likely the cost of a demo from Powder 7 or something like that. I have been consistently checking STP for any DPS Spoon action, these have no spoon!
