    Engelberg April Powder TR

Well as one or the other Euro maggot might have noticed i went to Engelberg this weekend to get a few late season powderdays and it worked out quite well. Engelberg got dumped upon and the idea of a late "Maden" mini summit formed on a german freeskiing board.
When the maps showed 50cm of fresh and bluebird for friday i was like " yeah what the hell let's do it ! " I got my things out of the summer storage corner of my room and left Cologne at 2am. At 4am i collected a guy i had never seen before at a dark Autobahn parking lot near Mannheim and we proceeded to go to engelberg. And that's the great thing about being a maggot. Maggots everywhere are the same friendly powder hungry dudes and you can hook up together and have a great time. "fallinger" (that's his board name) left his wife and kids at home, met with a 10 years younger freak in the middle of the night to drive 700km to get one day of skiing. If that does not fulfill the maggot requirements i don't know what else does.
The rest of the crew was already there or would arrive for first gondola up on friday morning.
When we got there it was nearly perfect. 50cm of fresh, bluebird and no one around. Avalanche danger was not to bad either and the mini summit began.
After skiing one lap of pow fallinger broke his ski and i had to get the replacement gear to him. Scott does not seem to make very durable gear as fallinger hadn't hurt himself or crashed very hard during the incident. And he is pretty far from charging that hard to brake a ski while skiing The package was finally delivered and we skied line after line of untracked goodness.
Half of the crew got tired and went down to have a few beers in the sunshine while the rest of us kept charging.
The day ended with a perfect run down the 1200m vertical "Laub" which was almost untracked because it had been crusty further down in the morning and people didn't track it very much. High speed powder changed to perfect corn further down and we did it in less than 5 minutes
I hope you enjoy the pics as much as i did the perfect conditions in late April.

Do I see powder over there ?

    Destruction galore....

    "Made" Marius charging

me, skiing with two pairs of skis at the same time !

Sun and sweet powder down to 2200m ....

i should have taken money and my trip would have been paid.
those chinese /japanse tourists flock together at the titlis in huuuge numbers

    The maden crew.

That's it. Those were my last days this season and im already waiting for fall 2005. maybe i should see a doctor........

Is 700 km round trip or one-way? How long did it take you to drive 700 km? Great shots, my favorite is when you're skiing with some spare skis in 50cm of pow.

But since you're a powderhound, it probably doesn't matter.

The best advice I have for skiing around here; be ready to roll, stay mobile, and follow the snow.

Nicely done. You scored the late season soft goods over there.
when not on the snow what else do i do...

That first pic is one of the stokeliest I have seen all year. Makes me want to get out there and CHAAARGE!

I'm definitely headed to Engelberg and Andermatt for the period between Christmas and New Year. You've got to let me know EXACTLY where that spot is because I'm going to ski it fo' sho'!

this is what I've learnt from the last two years: euro-pow goes to engelberg and StA. Other spots get much less
    BTW, very nice pics!!

    Excellent effort.
Hooking up with an unknown maggot is classic.

    Glad you got some.
Me, I attended physio today so all I can really say is:

    Thanks for the stoke.

engelberg is open until may 22nd
and @ roo and the others: im hoping to see a few of YOU next time im in engelberg

btw: update on the ski fallinger broke: He went to the shop he bought the ski at (for 45 euros !) and the scott rep was there at the same time.(guess you have to be lucky ) so when he showed it to shop guy and the rep and they were like: WTF ? some phone calls later fallinger was about to get a new ski for free. he asked for the santigo pure 05(193cm 101mm waist) but they were out of stock. One phonecall later he gets a brand spanking new santigo pure 06. As a replacement for an 45euro 82mm underfoot ski. !!!! scott's customer service seems to rock. lets hope the new ski holds up to it !

edit for verbier61: europowder? [cough] krippenstein [cough]..550cm at 2000m in march [cough].

Subtle Plague, is this typical for Engelberg, or is it conditions dependent and indicative of a bumper season ?

tjb (cause I want to hit up Engelberg for a season and this makes me sit up and take notice!!)
