NO you do not need another computer, all you need is a way to connect the 2nd hard drive to the Apple laptop at the same time to start the cloning. USB port and an adapter or USB enclosure would work just fine.... There used to be a few old Mac laptops that had no USB ports, but most newer models have USB connections.

lol yeah this is a fair point... nobody aside from Apple seems to be able to make a touchpad worth a damn

Even if the laptop is still in warranty, Apple's warranty may still apply- if the model is one that the hard drive is considered as user replaceable (which it is for some models- and not for others like the retina or the early 2008 series) then the end user can do it. Worst case, you keep the other drive around to swap back in if warranty service would be needed. If the item is classed as a user-replaceable part for that model. You can check if this is so by looking at the Manual that came on the install DVD or download one from Apple for your specific series.

Well, seems that 2011 Macbook Airs go for around $400 online, so you'll be somewhat ahead of the game. Personally, I'd chunk it and get something newer. Only 4 years old? Whatever happened to Macs being bulletproof? I kid, I kid. I just couldn't help myself. Macs are usually pretty bomber. I'm sure you'll be happy for a few more years with your refurb.

Well at least I won't have to deal with a ripoff robot arm trackpad.

Yeah, idk why I thought you'd need another computer for that. I think I got my cases confused.
    No longer stuck.

Did you send it with a green nug this time?

I am a PC guy and always buy Fujitsu computers off their Ebay store. I just recently bought one like this for my wife for $400. Great computers that last at a smokin great deal price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fujitsu-LIFE...item5671d178df
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

As a long time thinkpad fan, I'd love to tell you that's the way to go. Recently however, the brand has been significantly watered down. If you're in the market for a $2,500+ laptop, they're still a great option. But even in that class, they're feeling some heat from HP and Dell, as well as other niche manufacturers. It's a shame to see them falter, but not entirely unexpected. It really complicates the laptop question, which used to be a lock for the IBM/Lenovo product line.

Also, as much as I dislike Apple software, their hardware is still basically outstanding. Pretty sure you can't get an Apple laptop with more than 16gb of memory though.

Having just purchased a $3k laptop, I've been through the options recently. Despite being tempted by alternative products, I went with the W541/I7-4910/32Gb/K2100.

That's them. The good stuff wasn't included in that issue, and buying garbage consumer grade laptops is another discussion anyway. But yep, those are the morons.

Got the Macbook air back from apple, new board, new hard drive, new battery, new power supply, basically it's a new computer in the old shell, not too shitty for $280. I guess.

Look at what else you can get for $280... you see anything you'd rather have than your repaired MBA? Didn't think so.

Yep. You couldn't forget a nicer laptop in the car for that kind of money.

Depends on the spec. There are some beefy options, but they're not less expensive than a comparable laptop.

I like macbooks for the simplicity. Downloaded "refurb tracker" and they let me know when 'new' product arrives on apple's site. Waiting for the right specs/price. /blog

Really depends on the software- Photo Editing most likely all the standard packages would be able to handled on a Surface Pro 3 (iCore 5 and higher mentions Photoshop CC), video editing- basic stuff with some of the software out there, but really high end packages, and advanced stuff it would be best to get a real workstation with a much better video card. Also remember there is more than 1 model of the Surface Pro- 3 different CPU options (including a higher end iCore 7 CPU) and 2 different memory and storage options. It is going to come down to how big of video files you are going to be trying, what resolution and frame level you want and of course things like the codec used and compression that is acceptable.

Good deal on the MB AIR. I am glad to know that. I have a 2014 model, and I love it.

    But...

We got the kids the new iMac 27" 5k display. HOLYFUCKINSHIT. That thing is unreal.
ABC Mouse looks amazing on it

I installed PS, Lightroom, and Adobe Pro on it, as part of my subscriptions, I can DL them on up to 5 machines. Can't wait to import all my photos over to that machine. That display makes my shit look like Adam Barker photos.

A tablet would work for me 95% of the time, but I occasionally have some GoPro footage or photos that I would like to play with. Nothing at all serious.
