Phil easily still has the most chops out of the O4. Not saying he is on point compared to 15+ years ago but in comparison to the other 3, he's far and away the most in the pocket with BK a respectable second. His vocal presence in seemingly every tune is a bit overdone imo but who is going to tell him he shouldn't sing whenever the fuck he wants to.
Bobby is certainly not lacking for effort but the vocals and the chops just can't cash the check the passion is writing. Sad and even painful at times but he certainly isn't mailing it in either, it's just the reality of being 67 and having 50yrs of mileage on the vocal chords.
Bruce and Trey have both been fantastic and should step up to drive the bus musically this weekend. My take on the first 2 nights, it is obvious they all rehearsed individually (Trey most notably) but they needed more time as a group to be a cohesive unit live. I think they came a long way in accomplishing that last night...Chicago should be one hell of a ride!

Is anyone else enjoying just watching Trey react to playing with these guys? I'm not a Phish fan and prior to this wasn't much of a fan of Trey but it's been downright fun to see him looking like a totally psyched little kid, to say nothing of how well he's stepped up to the plate musically.
I agree. Trey is having a ball! JC was low in the mix sometimes but when he shined he was outstanding.
He's gone is funny. It's like they are in the audience singing along but happen to be on stage with mics in their faces.
I really enjoyed the drums section of that video from nite2. Is there video of similar quality of drums from nite1?

My thoughts on that "smokin'" Sugar Mag pretty much mirror the whole thing. 'Twas a sine wave of ugh to goosebumps and back again. For instance, in Sugar Mag Trey botches the intro and outro of his first instrumental break which throws them for a bit of a loop (1:34:45 for a minute - ugh) and then, towards the end of his fairly standard lead before they bust into Sunshine Daydream he pulls off an extremely Jerry-esque run (1:39:11) for the first time of that song and for a moment, holy shit! (goosebumps).
Listening via the comfort of home was cool. There were some good moments, some bad moments (He's Gone, and pretty much any time Phil and Bobby sang), but overall they weren't super firing*. Nevermind they're missing nearly 30 years of energy compared to this, but listen to the mixes if nothing else. Were Bruce and JC even plugged in? They're barely audible.
*I would have gone mental with excitement and spiral danced my brain out of my ears if I had actually been there.
edit: after spending some quality time with that 1987 show, I miss Brent as much as I miss Jerry.

Seriously, how would you like to be Jeff Chimenti? Sorta like being the drummer for Spinal Tap. I think Bruce is safe, but I keep expecting Jeff to spontaneously combust on stage at some point.
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.
We all want to turn the clocks way back. Need to roll with what it is...like a fine aged wine...sip it slow and enjoy.
Here is Sunday's show, I will have Saturday up when I get the newborn settled.

Perhaps the true value of the entire Dead 50 is not what it is, but the memories and feelings it inspires, and the fact that we made the whole strange trip with them. The Dead have always been the closest thing I've ever had to a religion, and the fact that Jerry died does not kill my faith, but it certainly does not still have the fire that made me a disciple.

looking fwd to the dropbox with good audio of nite 1, would like to see the video, too. i have always wanted to watch up-close-and-personal them doing their thing with all their percussion toys; it was one of the things that i enjoyed about the video of nite 2. i have always wanted to see a video of them making the apocalypse now soundtrack on their sound stage. recently, a pretty interesting gopro video was posted on mickey doing his thing at home, which was interesting on several levels. btw, why is mickey wearing gloves?
^^^ the reason most friends of mine went. though, i think a few went for an easy way to dose away from their kids.
Thanks. Hand drums can wear people out. Poncho Sanchez is a good unfortunate example.
Too lazy to read back thru the thread and see if this was already posted:
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.
