303 was strictly a protectant for rubber products in the past I think they advertised using on rubber seals of satelites and stuff but I think they branched out and I also seen another company who just did protectant get into DWR, I guess its all just chemicals

Back in the day we had a 5 gallon pail of 303 for dry suits, now all you can get Is 1 gallon jugs which is fine cuz a 5 gallon pail is hard to handle

I just bought some 303 DWR on Amazon but it was in a 303 Fabric Guard bottle, not the regular raft, etc. 303. IDK if they’re the same thing in different bottles?

Yes, the fabric guard has different ingredients than original 303 protectant. A link above has the details if you want to review the ingredient list.

Anyone have experience with Empel DWR treatments? Black Diamond and strafe use it and claim it lasts "more than 10 times longer than standard industry DWR coatings"

About to take a bottle of 303 to my bibs. I seem to recall someone in a different thread saying something about a quick dryer sesh to bake it in. Was this before or after you let it cure for the 12-24 hrs?

That’s how I do it; spray, let dry, dryer session, good to go

This stuff is mainly meant for outdoor use on canvas/sunbrella fabric. In those applications you can’t put the material in the dryer due to it being too large.

In the use case here; a quick run through the dryer activates the DWR. Also it will refresh the DWR if you dry your gear every 10-15 uses.

OK, so is that 303 the solvent based or water based product ?

I would use DWR on dry suits but not put them in the dryer apres dwr treatment cuz it would melt the latex seals so i would either iron or heat gun my own suit

I looked a bit and did not get a definitive answer. Probably could if I looked harder. But why when I can ask such a smart group of folks

Here in Maine we are having a real problem with forever chemicals both in well water for drinking, but also in our small farms. Dwr chemicals have been blamed and companies like ll bean are changing what they are using. Is this 303 really bad like that or only somewhat bad?

I've never been willing to put in the effort, but I always thought there'd be a market for a nice little website that's just "how to wash your stuff" with both written/photo instructions and a how-to video.

Just cover all the major categories (even if the techniques/text are duplicated, e.g. shell jacket and shell pants get their own article, synthetic insulated goretex jacket gets another, etc.). On each page cover your hand wash in a bathtub, front loader machine wash, top loader/auger machine wash options. Maximizes the chances of someone finding your page because the instructions are exactly what they want.

Keep the whole site clean and simple. Not too much discussion/debates on alternative methods, just clear Step 1, Step 2, Step 3. Recommend your favorite product, but link to the other majors and say they are all about the same.

The content is all out there, but it is kind of scattered across various sources, various manufacturer sites, etc. and it can be hard to decide how to handle something like a down-insulated Gore-Tex jacket (do you use the down wash? the performance wash? should you avoid a rinse-in DWR?) Putting it all in one place and just saying "do it this way" (even if there are other valid alternatives) would be nice for a lot of people who are apprehensive about washing their $500 jacket.

With light ad-load and referral links to buy the cleaning products from Amazon, you'd probably be able to cover costs and earn beer money...maybe enough to fund gear purchases.

Is that 303 stuff actually designed to go on things that are supposed to be breathable? Their website shows it works great on patio furniture, but that's not what I typically wear skiing.
    No longer stuck.

Good question. It was sold as UV protection for boat canvas. But it also repels bird shit and dirt and salt spray.

If it clogs pores that would suck.

You'd actually have to break a sweat to notice otherwise, Mr. Energizer Bunny.
