Beautiful weekend. The leaves are changing and the moon was red!
Once the kids were in bed it was time to search out the rare...

    Super Moon in BLOOD!

Here in the northeastern US, the lunar eclipse occurred rather high in the sky, so it was difficult to find something interesting to put in the foreground. The tallest things around here are churches so I went to see what I could find.

Happy Fall Mags!....checking in after a little summer hiatus. Did a solid hike in the Cats this weekend with NmbrdDays. Plus a stop at Keegan's to wet the palate.

    Not much color just yet

Woah, that's a beauty! Did you see Ernie Mills' shots over Mt Washington?

I hadn't heard of him. I just Googled him and he has some pretty spectacular shots.

Awesome shot... well done. Needs to be back on the front page.

As I was editing that shot, I started to feel very small.

    Jonathan, are you running ESAW?

I have to check my schedule but am thinking about making the trip out there for the day. There seems to be some interest within the ski and snowboard community at UVM as well.

I'm just one of many people assisting the main organizer, i.e., USFS lead snow ranger Chris Joosen.

(More specifically, I round up most of the donations for the raffle prizes and silent auction, coordinate/recruit most of the reps for the vendor expo, draft the grant proposal for the American Avalanche Association, and write up the summary articles for The Avalanche Review. I've also presented at ESAW, first on my avy course delivery format -- see link in my signature below -- and second on avy bag effectiveness -- ppt file here and audio here. Compared to everything that needs to be done though to pull of ESAW, my contribution is rather small ... which is a good indication of just how big ESAW has become -- and in only five years!)

Attendees definitely get far more out of ESAW if they've already had some formal avy training.
Or at least read something like either of Tremper's books.
But even if they haven't, it's still worthwhile, and might also motivate them to take such formal training or read such texts.
(Translation: Yes, you should make the trip out there, and bring some UVM'ers with you too!)

Yea, this^^^^ sucks. Ground is so dry and compacted very little will soak in. Pre-Vibes to those affected. That white area looks fucked.

And let's all cross our fingers that Joaquin stays the f%^& away. Another several inches of rainfall after this current event would be no bueno.

Getting closer to peak up here which is still probably 4-5 days away. Unfortunately that is when the hurricane is supposed to hit . So this weekend I'm going to have to get after it if I want to get some good fall shots.

Awesome shot NEK. Amazing how different conditions are here in the valley, we are just starting to see the first real color in the last few days. Joaquin could definitely put a quick end to peeper season, let's hope that's not the case as it would mean a lot less tourism $ for businesses statewide.

Lots of uncertainty in that path but it doesn't look good. Maybe it will pull in cold air and dump 5' of snow on the presidentials.

I'll use that as an excuse to post the ESAW agenda:

Mount Washington Hotel Grand Ballroom -- a rather significant step up from how in the past four years I resorted to scarfing down free pretzels in the IME loft!
