there were 4 wildfires over the weekend (5, if you include today) w/in 10-20 miles from my house, including one right at the edge of grass valley and empire mine state park (http://yubanet.com/fireuploads/1/tonyp.png). we have the benefit of having one of the calfire tanker airports in town.

that markleeville fire is concerning. there is at least one longtime kirkwood local that several mags know that may be directly effected.

Absolutely crazy how brown that golf course in Washington looked during the US open.

Here in Colorado we have had one of the wettest springs / summers on record. Weird weather year. The crappy weather has really sucked, but I would way rather have the rain and green grass than sun and wildfires.

I hope the west gets moisture soon

Last month was the wettest month in US history, nationwide. Weird as shit.

Washington Fire near Markleeville is concerning indeed.

I'll be in Celista for the long weekend, fire ban in place yet? Also heard that BC has spent 80% of their fire budget already, scary that August and september are typically the driest and hottest months. BC forests are gonna get fucked.

Hopefully this digression/threadjacking is cool, but what happens elsewhere will affect California, and Alaska's getting hammered right now. Yesterday's situation report listed 56 new fires just for the day, and 236 ongoing. A certain number of them will be limited (or no) response, but the smoke and drain on resources will be severe.

Inciweb says the Washington fire near Markleeville isn't running hard, just short crowning runs.

    Hah. I laughed.

Also, that would be sweet. Won't happen though.

Currently no campfire bans anywhere in the province. Open fires (burning barrels, industrial or agricultural, etc) are currently only permitted in the PG and Northwest fire centres. Given the state of affairs, though, I highly suspect that there will be campfire bans in place for the July 1st holiday. Not sure how it will roll out with the 1st being mid-week however. Check the website closer to the date, they usually give a day or two notice: http://bcwildfire.ca/hprscripts/wildfirenews/bans.asp Remember that incorporated municipalities and many private campsites may have different restrictions in place, depending on their own available resources and perceived levels of risk.

I hear the market for the newer propane-fuelled 'campfires' is quite hot right now, however.

here's the current perimeter map: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...Y.kt2J97Wt1PMo

it's got a little ways to go to get to markleeville, getting pretty close to the historic-era carson river resort, though, and it's fairly far to go to get to my personal friend near woodfords.

Out of all the shot crews in the country, only 14 crews are currently listed as available in the NIFC IHC Status Report

20 shot crews are currently in Alaska. I was in NorCal last month and couldn't believe how dry and brown it was. I've never seen it that bad. Going to a crazy next couple months. This could be an intense fire season, particularly if the PNW starts to burn. Places like western OR and western WA were way low on snow and resources are spread really thin right now.

That live video feed I posted is crazy - the flames look huge from that air, I can't imagine what they are like of you are on the ground or worse yet, the first line of houses in its path. Not looking good.

they grounded air support today for the big fire in san berdu because somebody was flying an unauthorized recreational drone over the fire.

People are idiots. That reminds me. Did I ever tell you about the time, and this is no bullshit, at this fire near LA I was working at a temporary parking lot helibase loading helicopters' belly tanks for water drops? Pretty busy, we had 3 or 4 ships constantly approaching, landing, loading, departing, lots of noise, etc. Out of the brush walks this guy wearing shorts and flip flops, holding a 5 year old kids hand and walks over towards the landing pads with the kid. I cut him off and ask wtf? He tells me he's going to ask the pilots for a ride, and was kind of pushy when I told him no way.

    People are idiots.

calfire was dropping retardant less than half mile from my house. contained as a 50'x50' area.

preliminary understanding of the cause was an old burn pile that flared up. Calfire put the burn ban in place on 6/22/15. On the sierra western slope, there have been many legal burn piles in the late spring that got out of control. my understanding is that calfire was not able to put the burn ban in place earlier this season due to staffing and budgetary reasons. pretty shitty.
