Just remember that a lot of Germans (those living in old towns not bombed to smithereens in WWII) have to contend with medieval streets were your F150 would scrape the fenders on both sides. It's a trade off. Also, one reason the Autobahn isn't crowded is that if you're going somewhere that requires the Autobahn to drive there, chances are there's a train that will get you there faster, leaving in 15 minutes. I'd love to have that kind of mass transit and let you have the left lane of the freeway all to yourself.

We need more trains too. Also, my section of I5 isn’t all that crowded. Autobahn rules everywhere but Portland metropolitan, maybe the stretches past Salem and Eugene too, could work. It would take a lot of signage and enforcement for a while, but people would learn.

It has to do with white people's entitlement. Because there's a lane that goes straight through, the obviously false assumption is that those people have the right of way. Easy fix I have seen in Maine on US 202 is to offset the new combined lane so that neither original lane goes forward in a straight line. It forces the three year olds to merge.
