OK. I'll bite. Due for what? All Jeep auto's go at 100k? All? Jeep autos are shit and no one in the world would ever buy one unless they are a clueless asshole? Funny, my research didn't show me any of that. Lots of jeep forum posts by happy automatic users. Why don't you try to be a good mag and clue me in. Special service tips? Telltale smells? Sell it tomorrow for whatever I can get?

Autos can go 100-150k, one of the cheaper and and easier trans to replace. It seems an auto is fine for your intended purpose. ....I'm Just giving you some shit; Better get use to it when talking with jeep enthusiasts.

Gotcha. My millionaire red neck rock crawling buddy dissed me on the first Jeep I showed him because it had square lights. I live in Jeep country with a good mechanic so I'm in good hands. Funny, my first ride was red too. Life is a circle.

Probably a former Top Gear Jeep. I can just see Clarkson "Jeeps are indestructible!! Oh deary, me! Guess not."

Since we have the Jeep people here, what is the 90's Jeep Cherokee of choice? There is one on my block that I have a feeling about, but just quickly school me on THE Cherokee. I like those boxy fuckers.

Do you know the backstory on that? How did he think he was going to get across that?

On the bright side, it makes a nice little bridge across the stream.

I was just being snarky anyway, I know wooley is a guy because I've seen pictures of him. Still it'd be funny if one of those kids on the Honda was him.

1996 is the best year - OBDII, 4.0 HO, Airbag (that is easily replaceable), and from my understanding for whatever reason the 1996s are less prone to vibration, etc when lifted compared to the 1997-2001 body style. Not sure why.

I had a 1996 as my first car, parents bought it in 1997 as a lease return, with 40,000 miles. They gave it to me in 2007 with 190,000. I sold it in 2012 with 285,000 and it was still going strong.

Of course I'm a guy. That little red Honda was a chick magnet. Picture is my wife's pesky little sis and her friend posing on the cycle.

IIRC that year still has the 3-speed automatic transmission. Stronger than the 4-speed used in later TJs, but no overdrive = crazy fuel suckage.

MPPG is right about the trans lifetime. But it's pretty easy to find a junkyard placement.

Hell my buddy converted his auto 06 LJ to a manual for less than 1G. He did install it himself so no labor costs though.

And why would anyone want a 90's cherokee? Unless you have plenty of money and are keen on constantly fixing shit… or are using it as a beater.

I bought two of them for our kids. I've owned a bunch of Jeeps. With the right drivetrain, XJs are quite durable, though lots of small shit will need attention. Luckily, that small shit is generally cheap and easy to repair or replace if you DIY.

Paying someone to repair and maintain a 90s Cherokee is a good way to burn a lot of money. You have to be able to do it yourself.

Tough engine, good transmission, decent on the road (can go 70 mph comfortably, unlike any of the wranglers in the similar price range/era), decent offroad, lots of aftermarket support, easy to work on, 20 mpg on the highway, last of the true AMC heritage. Requires more than a box knife to break into and steal.

I still get nostalgic about mine.

Gotta love jeeps. Had a bunch of CJs and an XJ. Never got into the Grand Cherokee.
