Yeah, I suck at proofreading. I realize that snowmobiles don't quite weigh 2000# each. My yj isn't thrilled about towing my single trailer with my 800 rmk on it. It works, but it's not ideal. Would much rather take my diesel excursion on days when I'm gonna pull the sled along. The excursion is kinda overkill for a <1000# load, but it's certainly more comfortable than towing it with the jeep.

Meh…., all those old jeeps are cool, but nothing beats the towing capacity AND off road capability AND reliability of a new toyota.

Plus, the old man wants easy to drive….4runner or newer FJ fits the bill perfect.

I kind of knew that asking to do k-turns on a FS road and also pull sleds was jongish, asking for a GS ski that will do well in powder. Towing is least important to me. I'm guessing that any 2"+ lift with agro tires would make 150 miles of freeway "interesting" and forget a multi state road trip.

That lime green looks sexy but not where I'm at. I have no clue to what this is telling me from the ad "1980 jeep cj5 4" lift ARB AIR lockers front and rear front Dana 30 with 30 spline Alloy shafts yukon 4:56 gears rear Dana 20 with one piece alloy shafts 4:56gears. and axle trusses"

Words today from my mechanic, Greg @ Todds Towing. Honest and The Man. You know what I mean. 2 bays, '57 Chevy 2 door in one and an Odyssey in the other. A car with the hood up waiting behind each bay and 10 more in the lot waiting for Greg.)

"Don't be afraid of high mileage engines. Those engines don't die, people kill them. Chrysler V8 if I can find one but you won't pass many gas stations. "

Think I'll be looking at the one in my first post this week.

This is interesting. I like the dash and seats better. But $8K?

It means he sunk a bunch of money into OK axles when he could have swapped them for Dana 40's and had a really badass rig. Still, for the weight of those 5's, those axles are fine for normal wheeling purposes.

Mine has a Dana 30 up front, and a Dana 40 in rear. No air lockers though, which are nice.

Shit, a V8 '94/95 Grand Cherokee goes for $2K-$3K these days with 100-200K miles and it will tow like a mofo.
Only time I ever got mine stuck was in four feet of powder gone glop.
The 6 cylinder only gets about two mpg better mileage.

At the mechanics this morning. Told me that grand Cherokees are the most unreliable car he works on.

And everyone just glances past the K5 Blazer. Which is 2 doors short of being a suburban, which is the gold standard for a road trip truck. Which, top off and doors removed, becomes a jeep. Which should be capable of towing 2K without even opening the secondaries.

    Top off, doors off:

meh...I've looked at the Portland CL. If you can't find a weekend excursion 4x4 toy for 6K you're not doing it right. IMHO.

It's like the K5 Blazers and the big Broncos were beamed off the planet. I never see them.

They are around, the CUCV Blazers are pretty fkna bomber as are the 1.25 ton CUCV pickups. Slide in a 4" lift with a turbo to give them a bit more punch and they are pretty sweet.

Not so much Beamed, but rusted. Especially in the NE.

New England is where good cars go to die. No wonder you hardly ever see really nice old trucks there, unless they are collector type vehicles.

I'm not so sure you'd want one with that high mileage (or one at all). I had a brand new '94 GC Limited with the 5.2L V8 that was far and away the worst car I've ever owned. The little trip computer routinely pegged my mpg at or around 8.8; it had low-hanging bits underneath that got caught, bent, and tried to eat my drive shaft when I tried to ford a suburban parking lot curb; the electronics were like playing a game of roulette with what would work one day and wouldn't the next; the sunroof leaked; and the fit and finish was so poor it rattled itself apart just 2 years into taking it off the dealer's delivery truck. But the Infiniti stereo thumped and that engine would go like a stuck pig when you mashed on the throttle so there's that I guess.

Just adding a cautionary note.. I know of 2 people that have been mangled after having had their Jeep roll over. Both were highway accidents and both were raised but not to a huge degree.

Short wheel base with a high center of gravity = bad shit.

Better than "Noted", I know what you say and that's why "no lift" is a top requirement. I imagine it would feel like high siding a cycle - on steriods. A feeling I've experienced 5-10 times.

lift is bullshit. sure it looks cool but opens the door to tons of problems

not to mention a 2 inch lift is like 1000$

not that any of you fucks care about 1000 dollars

That's almost one month of S.S. Your advice is good.

Leaving in an hour to drive an hour and look at the stocker in my 1st post. Spoke with the seller, did a Google street view and a Zillow. We were raised in the same tribe so that's good. I never bought any of my cars from CL. Bring some cash to hold?

So why do you need a thread to find a stock wrangler. Just go buy one. As far as off road capability you might as well buy a camry, a stock height wrangler is a complete turd...in almost every way. Don't mind me though, go find out for yourself.

Since we're all about anecdotal evidence, I've spent plenty of time driving lifted trucks around. Like road trips across the country and whatnot. IH Scout on 35's. Toyota on 35s. 78 Chevy. It's not a big deal unless you really suck at driving. Really...it's true. An ex-gf drove a lifted K5 and a lifted land cruiser, not a big deal... A different ex-gf drove a lifted YJ on 35's, not a big deal. I drove all those rigs quite a bit, not a big deal. I even used to daily drive a Samurai on 33's. Sometimes the shit people post on this forum boggles my mind. It's not like some 4" springs and bigger tires just immediately makes a truck unstable. Get a grip people. ffs.

Quoted for truth, all of it.

Stock Jeep's suck off road. They only have a good reputation for that because of the people that build them to be able to handle it.

I had the sway bar on my Blazer (not full size) disconnected for about a year back when I off roaded regularly. Drove it in the rain, snow, on the highway and never even had any close calls. You can't drive a lifted truck like a sports car, really not that hard of an idea to grasp.

James May's Samurai did make it across Boliva. Not sure about the towing capacity though.

Half doors off, top down, around town, my wife said no to the motorcycle, TOY.

    What I want to do:
-Take me and my best friend to explore places we would have hiked to once. Needs to travel FS and logging roads past where they dig a ditch to stop idiots in Outbacks.
-Ability to turn around at a place where over the side means death is certain. I feel this may be a 1 time/trip occurrence.
-Take me 200 miles on the freeway and fast 2 lanes with out beating me up too bad. Point of Reference, 300 miles of 50+ mph mountain 2 lane kicks my butt.
-Must tow 2 snowmobiles on the freeway and axle deep snow park lots
-Any thoughts on an auto trans are welcome

I've been shopping CL owner and this popped up. It'll sell before I'm ready but any thoughts?

Buy a truck. You can do all of this easily in a F1/250 or Chevy equivalent longbed. Very few FS roads don't end in a landing or have some sort of turnaround to be found as they were all created for logging and they had to turn their trucks around somewhere.

Not as cool as the Jeep, but if you are seriously going to be towing 2 sleds....

Because I didn't know jack shit about lifted Jeeps, towing and engines. Now I know more. As to just go buy? It's a toy. My grandfather wasn't rich... and I'm glad.

I had the loan of a 97 Wrangler 4 banger one summer. Loved it with the top and doors off. Found a NYS auto trail below Watertown (1920's overgrown farm road) and thought a Jeep sure beat hiking with a pack. I'm on vacation for the duration in a much more vertical world now. Hence the title of my thread I WANT A JEEP.

The white 97 wasn't it. Maybe. He'd have to come down $1000 more than he already did for me. Greg would do a clutch, some steering parts, new tires, fix the headlight issue (sounds like the column switch), O2 sensor and .......

BTW - Towing 2000# is off the table. Worked a deal with my boss to borrow the 2014 F250 that he bought last week when I need it.

1970(ish) Bronco. Seems to fit the bill, though they can be a little pricey.
    I can't remember...
