Enzymes discovered in human gut bacteria rapidly convert Type A or B blood to Type O. Both the discovery and the method used are amazing.

Awesome finding. I briefly contemplated pursuing glcobiology for my graduate work. Surface sugars give cells and protiens their personalities, to an extent.

    Cool Science thread

A surprising turn in my last post. Today they say it may have been sabotage.

cool thread. probably less science and more innovation and sustainability but one of my client's is pushing glue technology in carlsberg's new snap packs. would equate to reducing plastic waste globally by 1,200 tons a year which is the equivalent of 60 million plastic bags. a step in the right direction.

That's really cool. I liked the 4 and 6 pack reusable can holders when they came out but they just accumulate over time.
I saw this recently and I thought it was a good way to reduce material use and not have the parts made of plasticClick image for larger version.

NOAA bottom countour mapping project is ongoing. They have a long ways to go but they're working on it steadily and the detail where it's done is incredible especially in coastal waters: https://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/bathymetry/ (select BAG color shaded relief only, it gives the best view)

TESS data is starting to come in. 2 planets detected already, with ~10,000 more expected to be found in the life of the mission.

Cholesterol molecules found in exceptionally well-preserved Dickinsonia fossils confirm they were animals, settles 70-year debate. These meter-long, mobile animals were abundant 30-million years before the Cambrian Explosion, which means the first true animals evolved long before that.

This is fucking cool. They found the planet Vulcan, and it is right where Star Trek said it would be.

That is cool. Though, one thing we've learned from Kepler is that almost every star has as at least one planet if not several. So, it would be quite surprising for there not to be a planet there.

New pathway for Alzheimer's treatment discovered.
    https://gizmodo.com/european-scienti...y-i-1829298784

At least a decade before this could lead to any kind of actual human treatment, but still cool to see given the abject failure of most Alzheimer's research to date.
