He was at a small college with a very involved community of teachers and when he was at Columbia it was completely the opposite.
Agreed, likely a big fork in the road for him.
And thanks for that, the transition within the 3/2 is something we've kicked around at length.

Keep in mind the beta is almost 40 years old but you can't discount the drastic difference between Reed and ANY larger , traditional university. My brother just had no clue about the NY effect of Columbia on top of being at a school 10x the size of where spent his first three years(PLU) .
I also have a BIL that did 3/2 for engineering at Carrol College to Gonzaga around the same time period and he also mentioned the transition had a few bumps as a junior coming into an environment with fairly established social groups. I 'm sure it can all be overcome but it's something to think about , especially depending on your kid's social skills and level of comfort being an outsider for a bit.
You/son should also look at the actual placement rate of the engineering students at the partner schools. PLU waved Stanford as a 3/2 partner school at the time but VERY few were actually accepted there.

    Congrats man!

This cost is fucking real. Just had to throw down for room and board yesterday. So much for me doing anything fun for a while. That stung.

Yeah - it's *just* long enough between semesters that I kinda forget about it... then WHAM! - tuition due AGAIN.

Made the last tuition payment for the youngest, he graduates from the ISU 2 year auto tech program with an AA in a couple of weeks. Quite a journey for a kid who decided to stop going to school his 2nd year of H.S. and had to be shipped off to get his head straight.

Meanwhile the daughter has been hinting at parental financial contributions for grad skool, but that's always been a hard no. This bank is closed. She can go into hock like everyone else for the privilege.

Or tell her to get a grad degree that someone will pay her to get. It won't be a glamorous few years but it beats the debt. My wife borrowed a bunch of money for grad school before we met. She's doing alright now, but I was in effect helping her pay her loans. They are fortunately paid off now

Yeah, someone is going to give her money to do it, she just needs to look around a bit at her options. She might need to get some loans but it won't be much if she plays her cards right.

We've got one that is *probably* going to go the grad-school route. I *think* I've been pretty clear that the bank is closed after undergrad, but my wife is muddying the waters every now and again.

He isn't sure. Just knows he likes math, science, and political science, so we will see where he ends up. He's so far ahead with 2 years of running start, I told him to have fun in college and figure it out on his own time.

Just parted ways with our new freshman and firstborn child. Kinda tough for the younger siblings and parents. Stoked for the kid!

You ready for the , " got a kid in college diet" ? Can't afford breakfast, brown bag lunch followed up with top ramen for dinner...
On a serious note congrats and as much as you or mom want to keep tabs very second just let them be and make some mistakes and try to figure things out.

Try two at the same time - I was briefly down to one, but that only lasted a semester.

Yes, lived it and barely survived. Now just 3 more years left on last kid. That's the "fast weight loss" program , no brown bag lunch. Only one meal that's free crackers from a restaurant of your choice accompanied by ketchup/mustard/relish packet trio.

Having just graduated one from college (with one half-way through), you'll feel like you got a nice bonus when it happens.

Look on the bright side - in the blink of an eye she'll be graduating from Uni.

Youngest one gets dropped off at WPI on Sunday. Two year overlap with 1 and 2, only because #1 went back to get an extra degree, so an extra year. One year overlap with 2 and 3.

I helped my daughter move to Woooostah last summer and pretty impressed with the international flavor . Legit chinese grocery store and a decent african population offering some interesting variety of eating options .
