    Look up Deer Creek.

    http://wafreepress.org/09/Timber3.html

That hillside was logged in the 60s and destroyed a primo Steelhead stream, Deer Creek.

Now the erosion from that has resulted in this slide.

Terrible. That the hill slid is no surprise, although I doubt the residents anticipated the size of it. The general area has been the subject of studies re potential slides for years. I've driven by there 100 times to and from NCNP, Washington Pass, etc. and been creeped out looking up at those slopes.

So what does the Stillaguamish look like at I-5? Is it really low? I've been trying to find a traffic cam but there isn't one on that bridge (at least I couldn't find it). Crazy stuff. If it's not one thing..it's another.

The Walla Walla was running really high week before last - out of its banks but not on a flood watch. It receded enough for me to get a look at the channel, hoping it hadn't changed course too much. It looks like I'll have another good year for irrigation but I lost 40 feet of river bank.

Water will do what water wants to do......

Wow - found this site with pics:

Looks like you can go here now for pics (there are more here than the other site). Click on the galleries:

Damage from landslide on SR 530 in Oso

List of missing has risen to 108. Pictures remind me a lot of the Mt. St. Helens aftermath.

muddy waters, but the river has begun to move again thru the debris.
not a bad name for a drink though.

Well there is a drink called "Mudslide"

    1 oz Vodka
    1 oz Kahlua
    1 oz Baileys Irish Cream
    1 oz Milk or cream
    1 cup Ice

    Garnish: Chocolate syrup (optional)

Not sure what a "Washington State" variation might have - probably coffee instead of milk?

Substitute gin for the vodka. Gin is made from Juniper berries.

    100+ people unaccounted for.

Not getting into the humor on this thread. If this were a huge avy and 100+ people were missing would you be joking about it?

RIP, that's massive. I guess it's "good" that the river didn't produce a massive flood when it broke through?

are they core bros, or is it some people in Afghanistan or Pakistan or Russia who really do die in avy's close to that size, but aren't core bros? We don't acknowledge them unless they own twintip skis and baggy clothing, then they might be "one of us"

Damn, I don't know that I've ever seen a slide that (appears to have) broke that deep. It looks like the "slab" of earth must have been 100+ feet deep.

Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying but in all fairness there is no joking about anything - simply talking about alcohol and perhaps some would find it appropriate to raise a glass for the lives lost. We all deal with tragedy in our own ways. Not that one thing makes another right but there is a fair amount of quasi levity in the Malaysian thread - ppl deal how they deal.
