That hillside was logged in the 60s and destroyed a primo Steelhead stream, Deer Creek.

Now the erosion from that has resulted in this slide.

Terrible. That the hill slid is no surprise, although I doubt the residents anticipated the size of it. The general area has been the subject of studies re potential slides for years. I've driven by there 100 times to and from NCNP, Washington Pass, etc. and been creeped out looking up at those slopes.

So what does the Stillaguamish look like at I-5? Is it really low? I've been trying to find a traffic cam but there isn't one on that bridge (at least I couldn't find it). Crazy stuff. If it's not one thing..it's another.

The Walla Walla was running really high week before last - out of its banks but not on a flood watch. It receded enough for me to get a look at the channel, hoping it hadn't changed course too much. It looks like I'll have another good year for irrigation but I lost 40 feet of river bank.

Water will do what water wants to do......

Well there is a drink called "Mudslide"

1 oz Vodka
1 oz Kahlua
1 oz Baileys Irish Cream
1 oz Milk or cream
1 cup Ice

Garnish: Chocolate syrup (optional)

Not sure what a "Washington State" variation might have - probably coffee instead of milk?

Search and rescue teams took to the air in helicopters and the ground on foot on Sunday looking for anyone who might still be alive.

Their spirits had been raised late Saturday night when they heard the cries for help from the flotsam of trees, dirt and wreckage.

Dangerous conditions forced them to turn back in the darkness, but they resumed their work at first light Sunday.

"We didn't see or hear any signs of life out there today," Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots said. "It's very disappointing to all emergency responders on scene."

I can't imagine what it must be like for the SAR folks who heard cries for help that they couldn't reach the night before, then nothing the next day. And I can't imagine what it must have been like for the people crying for help, to think they might get rescued, then getting left to die.

Damn, I don't know that I've ever seen a slide that (appears to have) broke that deep. It looks like the "slab" of earth must have been 100+ feet deep.

Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying but in all fairness there is no joking about anything - simply talking about alcohol and perhaps some would find it appropriate to raise a glass for the lives lost. We all deal with tragedy in our own ways. Not that one thing makes another right but there is a fair amount of quasi levity in the Malaysian thread - ppl deal how they deal.
