I'm not public policy expert and I drive everywhere at 15mpg. I agree with the concept that public transport needs to provide true benefit and currently that doesn't exist. Is it possible that fuel prices (and possibly other taxes to driving a car), congestion levels and other dis-incentives to drive will continue to increase? At the same time, infrastructure will develop around the public transport and people's behavior will change?
How does light rail work these days in the Tech Center? How do people get from the station to the office? Just building public transportation doesn't change the fact that we have a car-centric culture.
Side note: Electric bikes are pretty awesome for the <15 mile trips. I friend of mine has some Austrian model with Bosch batteries and he averages 23 mpg on a hilly 12 mile round trip to town. If I lived in Denver, I'd have one for sure.
This reminds me of my NYC golfing days in my early 20s: the best muni course was out on Staten Island and I didn't want to drive (cost of the Verranzano Bridge, gas and losing my parking spot). My friend and I would haul our clubs to the nearest subway, take two subways to the Staten Island Ferry, pay like $2, then take a cab over to the course. Then do it in reverse later. Looking back, it was ridiculous. That's how driving from house to light rail, light rail to Union Station, train to one ski area feels. Forget powder mornings [emoji23]
We have car centric city planning. There are a couple hundred homes in my neighborhood and the connecting neighborhoods. It's a great area geographically- it sits in a little valley with a big hill on one side and mountains on the other.
In europe my neighborhood would be a little hamlet with some restaurants, shops, a small grocery store or two and maybe even a trolley or lightrail to connect it to the rest of Golden and the Denvere metro area. A lot of houses would need maybe one car, not two.
Here in the states, there isn't a grocery store within 2 miles of my neighborhood and it is all residential. No shops, and no public transportation except for the unused lightrail a mile away.
Just chiming in to say that I like the light rail from Union to Denver airport. Sure, it'd be nice if there was an express or it was cheaper, but it makes getting to/from the airport pretty reasonable during rush hour.
Golden to Union station takes forever, though.

formerly an ambassador for a few others, but the ski industry is... interesting.
Fukt: a very small amount of snow.
He sounds like just another bitchy Franger who doesn't know how to avoid driving at peak and couldn't be bothered with selecting proper equipment for the journey then blames it on the road.
He would fit in perfectly in this thread
Now that is a guy who knows how to bitch.... sounds like quite the douchebag. And his "first hand" stories are embellished beyond the point of actual belief.
So... what's Marc's TGR handle? He's surely contributed to this thread.
The coup de grace would have bitchin' about the abandoned boat in Georgetown.
I don't have any problems with the road itself. It's the 4 million ass wipes, that cause most of the trouble.
I'm coming through again in a couple of weeks, dragging a big ass trailer. I just make sure to do it, late at night.
I don't get it, it was a quality read?
WTF
I'm guessing he was trying to be funny, cool, and brag about what bad ass weekend warrior he is? someone point me in the right direction
he kind of sounds like a pussy now that I think about it, seems like his mom only gives him permsiion to have a good time once a month and he gets so exicted for the hall pass that he kind up bumbles it up pretty good
You aren't stuck in traffic.
You *are* traffic.
I just passed massive traffic on I70 WB near Floyd Hill....who the hell is coming up to the high country on a holiday Sunday at 2pm and sitting in that shit?
^Probably a bunch of people who thought traffic wouldn't be bad going up because it's an afternoon in the middle of the holiday weekend.
