Yea, I couldn't figure out what was going on on 50. Especially with letting them close the road. I worked on some large projects in AK and shutting the road down was out of the question.

Yea I have worked on billion dollar highway projects that were done in a shorter time while traffic was maintained in both directions.

I know this is a bitch thread, and I probably posted this years ago, but the Hwy 36 reconstruction between Boulder and Denver was one of the most amazing construction projects I have ever seen. They completely rebuilt the roadway while keeping the same # of lanes going in both directions during the daytime (late at night, I think they would occasionally go down to one lane each way).

It was a freaking construction ballet as they moved you from one side to the other for years, but traffic continued to flow pretty well for the whole project. Hopefully they will do something similar for 70.

Let me guess - they did NOT take the lowest bid for that one...

Possibly. It was/is one of those PPP things, so not exactly about the lowest construction bid, as the contract is ongoing.

And this is what you actually do, so if your mind is blown too, I feel justified in my WTF?

Hwy 36 between Denver and Boulder was design-build and funded with Goldman-Sachs in a public-private 50 year agreement

    So yeah not CDOT necessarily

Also not really used much by big rigs...which is the primary problem on I70 as I've mentioned a few times.

Right?! But yeah, total shitshow from my perspective too. I figured it had to do with a low bidder and incompetence, especially when they announced resuming the construction in mid-March this year.

Timely rant, I'm headed through there tomorrow AM for the first time in a while. I think I'll chance it vs taking 70 though.

Simple nailed it, design build with completion incentives. By far the quickest way to deliver a construction project.

Good point; there are some trucks but not nearly the same amount. And I wasn't really saying that the 70 project should be able to do it exactly the same anyway, just commending a project for being well done rather than the usual bitching.

When I first saw your user name and your comments about bridge construction I wondered if you were part of T.Y.Lin. Just thought I would throw that out there as I am sitting around doing nothing but sweating.

Nope - more on the contractor side than the design side. Although I am intimately familiar with them.

Gold Creek is a great camping spot (when there aren't decomposing bodies, at least). Up Bear, across Fossil, and down Gold Creek is the preferred direction, even though a Bear descent might look better on paper. Bear starts off hard- lots of hike a bike.

I think I like the western side of Fossil more, although both are good. Start at the top of Lost Canyon, down beaver McIntyre, up alder, across fossil ridge.

Summiting Fairview from Gold Creek is another favorite in the area, if you like hike a biking to 13k summits with really cool old fire lookouts. Totally rideable on the down.

Yup, I haven't rode up there much, but I used to spend a lot of time up there camping and hiking around. Be interesting to hear how this story unfolds...

It's all good, they're so out there they could probably use a little traffic. If Miner's actually had a MTB association clean it up a little- whoa
