So why dont I70 ski areas offer something like 11 am to 7 pm skiing this time of year?
Last time I posted this I got some BS about hospitals not being open later in the day and how dare I suggest anyone work anytime other than 9-5. Seems like those that run things have finally realized the situation needs attention (for years they did NOTHING).
I think the issue is that it would cost the ski areas a lot more money to do this, and they would not receive additional revenue to make up for that increase in operating expenses. If your argument is that revenue would go up significantly, then the counter is that the ski areas don't believe you.

I know im a moron but humor me, why does it cost more to run a ski area from 11-7 than from 9-4? Does the electricity cost more to run the lifts later in the day? Are people paid more to work 11-7 than from 9-4? Insurance? Im not being sarcastic, I realize im an idiot.
As a customer, I would pay more for alternative hours that would avoid the bulk of the traffic.
Seems like lots of the front range weekday working class would have an easier time skiing in the afternoons than in the morning. Work 6-12 once or twice a week and get a full or mostly full ski day in??? Seems like it would be a lot harder to tell the boss you'll be working from 2-8, than from 6-2.
Doesn't really matter too much thought since I think the traffic problem on I70 is so bad (volume vs demand) that we're beyond the point that anything like the ski areas staggering their hours would alleviate the situation. If you want to live in a nice place and go for a nice drive to the ski area on your weekend days off , front range colorado is obviously not the place for it...
Sorry, I misread your post, I thought you were suggesting that they just stay open longer, ie extended hours, which would cost more (hopefully that is self-explanatory).
But if they're running 11-7 instead of 9-4, why do you think that would somehow avoid the bulk of the traffic? If the traffic is all ski dependent, moving the start time to 11am would just move the heavy traffic 2 hours later, wouldn't it?

11am start time is fucking stupid. How would you like to be sitting at the base of the lift watching all that fluffy white pow that fell overnight turn to mush before you could ski it. It's happened to me at Alyeska and it sucks. Saw two feet of pow turn to 10 inches of mush before the lifts opened.
Plus what about the people who like to ski before work? I got a few hours of hot laps in this morning before work.
Also snow turns to shit this time of year any time after about 3 or 4. Anything north facing is a sheet of ice as soon as it goes into the shade.
Plus, nobody wants to ski that late in the day. Happy hour starts at 3pm!
Thanks shredgnar, yeah sometimes fresh snow on sunny aspects snow turns to mashed potatoes in the afternoon. Sometimes it snows in the afternoon too, more often sunny aspects are icy and shitty in the am and nice and slushy and soft(er) in the afternoon. You could make the arguement that afternoons are better or mornings are better.
And yeah danno with the current load its possible that spreading out the traffic wouldnt have much affect but I have driven up at 10 am on a powderday and traffic has been gone by then...
I dont think there are any good solutions, doing a bunch of things may alleviate the situation some, theres no magic bullet, like I said if you're a weekend skier and want to drive the day of this is not the place for it....
Have you actually skied after about 5pm? I have, many times, in April. Unless it's an overcast pow day, the air almost always gets cold enough that everything turns back into refrozen coral reef by that time.
Keystone already offers night skiing for you lazy fucks who can't get up in time to beat the traffic. Why don't you head over there around 5pm and tell us how the snow is.
What a stupid question. If you want to ride lifts after 5PM, move to the Midwest or East.
And ... what ski patrol (or area) will allow the opening of gnarly terrain after 3:30, let alone 5? Would you want to be responsible for sweeping at that time? Just sayin' ...

Could turn into one with these temps...
This thread is so representative of how skiers think in 2015. It's all about what others should do for you but nothing about what you could do for yourself. No trucks, ski area hours of operation changes, chains or 4x4 requirements. All so you can get to where you want to go when you want to get there in the amount of time you think it should take.
You know what you could do? Not travel at peak times, stay up Sunday night, get up earlier. But no, that's not now skiers do it these days. If it's not the traffic, its the weather, or ski patrol, or ticket prices, or inferior equipment that can't contain your radness, or the flat light, or the crowds....
Horse shit!
It's way beyond narcissism, and you should know that.
Corridor has reached critical mass along the metro area, and bitching about common sense solutions to ease the pain for awhile seems in order.
Most everybody here already knows the game, travels accordingly, and even that has become near unbearable.
Critical mass? Please. I haven't been stuck in I70 traffic once this season. The sheep aren't on the side if the road, they are the ones in the cars at 3pm on Sunday.
Flat light does suck though.
I think this crowd is pretty savvy at navigating 70. It can still suck balls Friday-Sunday.
The breaking point is still a few years away, but it’s inevitable without any corridor improvements.
I'm not saying it doesn't suck. I'm saying that a. it's avoidable and b. in the grand scheme of societies challenges, weekend ski traffic is and should be pretty far down the list.
3rd lane will be as soon as huge creekside walls and widened bridge underpasses are done. Asshole drivers will still clog up the left lane.
The left lane deal is beyond terrible. Most literally have zero idea they shouldn't be in that lane cruising. Another epidemic is the MASSIVE overuse of the brake. Just let off the gas, the car will slow down andost of the time you don't even need to do that. The car isn't going to fly off the road in a curve.
