    Pieps IProbe One Probe Transciever

Pieps came out with a probe that uses optical and acoustic targeting to find buried transceivers. Seems like an interesting idea for the deeper burials, but it don't really see it having anymore benefit than just using my handheld beacon. Thoughts?

The probe also allows you to turn off a supported Pieps beacon that is within range, so in theory if you have a multiple burials you can clear out some noise on the other searches while you dig out the person's beacon you just turned off.

Also, in theory the probe gives you some clues if your hitting someones boots or torso, which even in a 'shallow' full burial could save minutes in establishing an airway.

How is this different than the previous iProbe that was marketed for several seasons?

And it's an "optical and acoustic target indicator" aka a display if I read that correctly.

Just looks like a minor update to the old one, except this one is marketed by BD!

There is a beacon receiver in the iProbe tip.

You use your transceiver as normal right down to completing the fine search.

You then start spiral probing as normal.

When using the iProbe, you don't necessarily need to hit the buried body with the iProbe as it emits a sound when the tip of the probe is within 50cm of the buried transceiver. For some, that is close enough - time to dig (with a strategy). For others, they want a physical strike, and the sound confirms the strike.

Personally, I would like more of the proximity threshold was only 30cm. Or I'd like the ability to change proximity settings and then experiment for myself.

Yes, indeed, Pieps did do that -- in Fall 2008, so half a decade ago.

See, BD's ownership of Pieps and increased marketing in North America is already working!

Only relatively minor changes from the original 2008 version:
