J&K Tourism Department has been organizing Skiing at Gulmarg since the early 1970s, but an entirely new dimension was added to the activity with the commissioning of second phase of Gulmarg Gondola project in 2005 which made it possible to Ski down from Mount Affarwat at a height of approximately 14000 feet, as a consequence of which the department engaged certified Snow Safety Officers who led the local ski patrol team and were responsible for patrolling, avalanche mitigation, evacuation of injured skiers, use of explosives for triggering avalanches, imparting skills to the local team etc. Last year a chair-lift (Kongdoori to Mary’s Shoulder – almost half way point of Affarwat Mountain from Kongdoori) was also commissioned which increased the activity in the area.
Now for the winter season 2013-14, the Department of Tourism, J&K invites offers from certified/accredited Snow Safety Officers to head the ski patrol team in Gulmarg for a period of three months viz December 15, 2013 to March 15, 2014. The role of the selected officer (only one position is available) would be:
To lead the ski patrol team in a proactive manner and endeavor that no mishap takes place.
To segregate the mountain area into marked and unmarked zones.
Avalanche mitigation and controlled use of explosives for avalanche triggering.
To take a call whether to close the upper mountain reaches for skiing due to storms or perceived threat of avalanches and issue advisories/notices accordingly.
Evacuation of injured skiers and administration of first aid.
Training of the local ski patrol team.
To develop strategies pertinent to local conditions.
General advice to J&K State Cable Car Corporation and Tourism Department regarding operation of the lift/skiing.

Quote of professional charges for three months.
Apart from payment of professional charges, the Department shall provide the following to the selected candidate:
Reimbursement of Economy Class Air fare from country of origin–New Delhi –Srinagar and back.
Board and lodge at the place of choosing of Tourism Department.
The last date of receipt of offers is 25.10.2013. It may also be noted that the Department will not arrange for insurance of the selected officer and will not be liable in case of any injury/mishap to him/her.
