Powder Mag Interactive Special on Mammoth Lakes

    http://www.powdermag.com/the-town/

Interested to see the other episodes. Great initial (albeit short) interview of Dave McCoy.

Ever seen Homeland? Same shit, except this time you actually know what happens (hint: Intrawest goes bankrupt--and so does the Town).

Interested to see how they show it and the perspective they take.

Thanks for that bump. I liked it.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Perhaps you missed the second post in this thread?

My initial thought was it reminded me of the NYT's "Avalanche at Tunnel Creek" (which was interactive) because you have traditionally-print journalist stepping into new terrain, so I got the term fucked up in my head. Can't edit the thread title so my apologies for not using the correct terminology. Next time I'll make sure to meet your standards.

^^^lighten up Francis. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I thought maybe Powder Mag was promoting it as "interactive".

The NYT article was significantly different as there was a multi-media aspect that allowed readers/viewers to choose various ways to review the information.

    Bump for Part IV

Try not to choke when you hear the town's "solution" to their fuck up. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

I have to admit the town council has some balls.

Yeah. Such a cluster. Really sad when they interviewed the police chief.

Finally watched this and it makes me sick to my stomach. So many of us saw this coming, those who didn't get caught up in the hype saw disaster looming. It always felt like a scam, and it was. Worse, it was a clusterfuck of the worst degree.

Haven't seen part 4 yet, but 1-3 were quite informative. Twas weird being around town this last Spring and seeing the differences from a year ago. Far less police presence for sure.

I never flew into the airport, but you would hear about the flights being unable to land on the reg. Someone once told me that the airport was originally designed as a cross-wind training facility. Whatever the story, the runway isn't placed along the prevailing wind axis like most of the chairs at Mammoth.

It's sad really. It seems the strategy is to maximize revenue. That usually means people suffer at the expense of the man to create profits
I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

Yep. Almost worked for the contract GC to MLWD. That would've been interesting.

What's the inside word on that deal? It sounded like DWP was in the right (at least legally) the whole way. They damn near own the east side, and as much as the east siders refuse to admit it, most of them sold out for profit at the turn of the century.

Seems like they left a whole lot of the back story out of that piece.

My understanding was the resort wanted to bring in big jets(757's) from all over the US. That entailed expanding the runway at MMH, even though Bishop's airport already had long runways.
But RG wanted them to land in MMH and thought he could get plane loads of tourists to fly over Colorado and Utah to get there?

my understanding is that there was precedence in support of the local district.

re: bishop airport. i'm not sure if there was consistent community support with the development of (and investment) into the airport facility in bishop.

The airport and bankruptcy saga is rich and textured, but these shorts miss a lot of the detail. These guys - both grad students in journalism - did a great job on an intro-level piece. But I hope they return for a longer form exploration of what happened. Then again, "longer" probably is not in the lexicon of "multimedia journalism"...

That's my understanding too, or at least what I remember from reading the background on the dispute a couple years back. DWP did not hold all the cards legally, but obviously they hold all the money.

Yeah, but DWP has somewhat successfully shown those precedents to be invalid, and the state had no right to grant the regulations. Fortunately it looks like cooler heads have prevailed, and a workable compromised had been found.
