    Fernie Mags-Conditions for Comp

Thinking of coming down for the big mountain comp from March 16th-20th. I know it's a bit far off as far as foretelling the conditions during those exact days, but how are the conditions right now? Is there any base at all?
I want to come but I want to make sure conditions are somewhat adequate, so the beating I will take in grades at university won't seem the half bad.
    Let me know.
    Thanks

My roomie planned on going up there Monday and Tuesday. She ended up skiing for 1 hour monday morning, getting a voucher for her ticket and drinking the rest of the day. Conditions are worse there then they are here at Big Mountain.

Pretty crappy conditions. There isn't even spring corn, just isothermal mush, in general the alpine snowpack is pretty low. People have been skiing lines off the headwall, last week anyway. The snow is fading fast, I got my doubts the hill will make the end of the month unless we get a dump.

Having skied Big Mountain three weeks ago, that is not a ringing endorsement...in 15 years of skiing there, I had never seen so little snow there. It was sad.
I went out there in search of experience. To taste, and to touch, and to feel as much as a man can, before he repents.

Ouch...doesn't sound too promising. So ice in the alpine...venues, and mush below with little base. Does that pretty much wrap it up or any other info?

Temps have been above freezing to mountain top at Fernie all this week, but now it is about to cool down. Enviro Canada says lows of -10C by Wed and highs of -2. Unless it snows big time (which is not in the forecast), it is going to be wicked icy and hardpack when/if the comp starts.

Check Fernie's snow report and Craig's FAR and if it hasn't unexpectedly dumped by Sunday, then you might want to work on your GPA and let Fernie slide until next year.

There is precipitation forecasted. It rained in Calgary/Banff for 4 or 5 hours today, I imagine it was wet in Fernie. So if it rains and then goes to -10 without snowing the hill will probably have to shut down with no snow/dangerous ice.

Maybe a light at the end of the tunnel:

Elk Valley: Issued 5.00 AM MST Monday 14 March 2005
    Today..Flurries. High 2.
Tonight..Cloudy periods with 40 percent chance of flurries. Low minus 4.
Tuesday..Flurries. Wind becoming southwest 20 km/h late in the morning. High plus 2.
Wednesday..Periods of snow. Low minus 2. High plus 1.
Thursday..Periods of snow. Low minus 13. High minus 4.

Well as much as I like a little bit of pow in Whistler...I think my grades should've taken the hit. 40 cms is nice even though the ice is still biting obviously for the competitors.

I guessing there will probably be about another 15cm of fresh this morning up there. It's still putting it down...you know where I'll be!

Just got back from the comp.

Conditions looked a little hard on day 2 and 3 because they were. 50cm of fresh but, heli bombing, ski cutting and inspection runs scrapped a lot of it off.

The hill was super sick and deep. Skied this morn before I left with another 10cm of new and some deep turns.

    HaHA,

First clip is Daryl Treadway chucking a late back to his head and the other shot is his little bro Dave making a big mistake as well on the same huck. Both escaped without any injurys.

    Crazy Treadway bros....

So how'd you do? For whatever stupid reason, there isn't a full list of athletes on Biglines or the Fernie website. Interesting that Daryl got 3rd, and Dave got 5th, even with those horrible wrecks.
