Looks like a fun Jeep. You should start negotiations by insulting his spelling skills and teaching him how to spell brakes.

While I can see the fun appeal of a wrangler, I cannot fathom ever buying another Jeep again. I had a brand new '94 Grand Cherokee Limited with the honking 5.2 liter V8. While it went like a stuck pig, it literally started falling to pieces the day I had it delivered. I'm talking it shed random bolts, bits, and trim at an alarming rate.

Looks nice and basic, just what you said you were looking for. I once had a 95 Wrangler, so same square headlight vintage. I liked it. Mine had the 4 cyl and a 5 speed manual.

With my luck it'll be the best one to show up. There will be others. My ignorance of high mileage engines was my main reason for posting. We had an '81 Isuzu trooper we bought new. Vinyl floors, manual hubs and a couple dozen or so U joints. I think that's when I bought my high capacity grease gun. They and the rest of the industry morphed the cars into not so rugged looking AWD Buicks. My brother in law has had a succession of Cherokee's since the '80's. He's an idiot.

As a '40 and TJ owner, I concur with this statement.

If you want something with character-CJ, early Bronco, FJ40, IH Scout, etc. If you want something cheap to drive FS roads with the top off, Suzuki Samurai. If you don't care what you're in other than having the top come off and 4x4, any Jeep would work but remember that's a soft "J" in Jeep.

Get a mechanic to run a compression and leakdown test on the engine. Not terribly expensive and easy to do. Make the sale contingent on the results. Regardless of mileage, if the compression is good and there are no leaky valves or headgaskets the engine should run a long time.

Eh, I think a TJ, old 4Runner (kind you can take the top off) or Samurai would fit the bill. CJ5's weren't designed that well and have a bunch of weak parts if you get the wrong setup. FJ40's are nice, but usually expensive for a decent example.

Last two posts were gold. Borrowed my brothers TJ for the summer a few years back and loved the shorter w.b. Learned that one should get a lock for the spare.

You always have to check the spare with these old cars.
