    Orvis Fly Tying Kit

    What's going on guys/gals?!

New to the forum and fly fishing in general. Currently living in Western Mass. and was fishing 2 or 3 times a week on the Swift River here locally. Loved it while I was out there, just got side tracked with the weather and work sadly. Got the Orvis fly tying kit for XMas from the girlfriends parents, very cool. Just looking to see if anybody else has this kit? Any reviews? Quality of materials? What is it lacking? Etc.

Also just looking for good reading material for learning to tie flies! Got some down time to read and practice so bring on the advice.

Thanks for the help, look forward to spending time on the boards.

Don't know much about the tying kit you have. But here is a great link with tons of patterns and step by step instructions. Tying is great fun. Enjoy.

once you start tying flies seriously you will figure out for yourself what that particular kit lacks and will end up buying more materials for your specific fly needs. I was tying on a similar kit for the past year and a half and just upgraded my vice and tools after realizing im really into it. check out charlies fly box for a ton of good patterns with great instructions:

I'm not a tier, but I know that the shop near my house has tying classes once a week or month. I don't know if there is anything like that available in your area but it would probably be worth looking into.

It's a fly tying kit; a way for manufacturers to coble together shit that doesn't sell and pawn it off on people who don't know any better. Find what you want to tie; buy good quality materials for doing that. "expensive" materials like hackle can be much more useful and worth it in the longrun; shit hackle is shit.

So, I'm about to buy some stuff. Can anyone throw up a list that would be better to start with than a starter kit? I'm spending more time in the salt than fresh right now. Average fly used is over 3" right now.
