In a drift, anyone been hipped to a guy named Ariel Posen? A little slicker than Isbell but still in the Americana vein. Heavy duty slide player/singer/songwriter. Just bought Tickets for a couple if October shows in SEA and Vancouver BC. $22.00.

Based on your recc, I put on the ‘This is Ariel Posen’ playlist on Spotify. I didn’t get any Jason Isbell cross over at all. No storytelling, no down home vibes, etc. It was kind of vanilla/John Mayer until a time named Angeline came on and the guitar name caught my ear. So I guess, just like John Mayer. [emoji846]

I don't hear Mayer, more Brothers/Joey Landreth. Yeah. didn't mean to imply too many Isbell similarities, just for me fits in the broad Americana vein. Soulful pretty songs with very good guitar playing. Think I mentioned it was slicker. I'm a sucker for a pretty song. What can I say.....?

I got into Kevn via his solo work, specifically MacDougal Blues, which is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Some of his other solo work, such as The Flower & the Knife and Broken Hearts and Auto Parts, are also solid and most definitely fall into that folk and Americana vibe.

For as much as I think Cast Iron Skillet is drivel, the rest of the Weathervane album is damn fine. Yes it’s generally dark - particularly Save the World, King of Oklahoma, and Miles - but that’s the world these days. The imagery is real and the tunes are enjoyable to listen to.

I listened to When We Were Close Again. Both an ode to and a lament for Justin Townes Earle. Sad.

Yeah, the album is really growing on me. Starting to hear some extended jams between Slader and Jason of Death Wish, Middle of The Morning, and This Ain’t It that are insane. These songs will develop into concert staples. Some are a little too obvious (Cast Iron Skillet, White Beretta), and I few haven’t totally grabbed me yet, but I have a feeling they will.

Especially the way he weaves in references to his dad's and his namesakes' songs

As a big Trucker's fan from Mojo XM days, I've tried and I've tried a lot. Jason Isbell is massively talented but it's not my thing. Maybe I don't drink enough, haven't been around enough hardcore addition or get sad enough? Maybe it's folk music and I just don't like that?

There is definitely something to that. Being 13+ years sober, and having nearly destroyed my life, I connect to the lyrics more than many. However, his other songwriting, both musically and lyrically, is without peer. I would prefer in concert if he only did maximum three tear-jerkers, as he is SO capable of face-melting solos with Sadler as well.
