In the interview that Tye just linked to she says this incident is going to cost over 30,000 dollars..
How does she arrive at that figure? Is that counting replacing their truck, camper, gear, medical costs, etc?
Did they not have any insurance at all?
I feel bad for these people in this situation, but it seems like they didn't properly prepare for their trip, nor learn how to react if an issue was to arise...
She also states in the the interview that they didn't ask for people to give them money, and that they are uncomfortable asking for help, but on their blog, and I am assuming this was put up before the incident, there is a link to a paypal account to give them money saying "buy us a tank or a taco". They also have a "sponsors" page.
People are certainly free to give their money to whoever they want for whatever reason, but I feel like these people were kids taking a trip that a lot of people would love to take, but can't, because it costs a lot. They are now asking, and getting lots of money from the general public, when their property loss, and medical bills should have been mostly covered by insurance, and they should have had some funds stashed somewhere should something like this occur to get them home if needed.
I might feel differently if they were doing volunteer work, or something, but they were having an extended vacation.
It just seems wrong to me. I hope they choose to donate the money they receive beyond what they need to get home to a charity. It is almost up to 17,000 dollars.
I guess now that the holidays are over, we can all get back to being assholes. These people were beat to within an inch of their lives on their honeymoon. Yeah they made some mistakes, yeah, they probably should have bought better insurance, yeah a local guide or handing over paperwork might have been a good idea, yeah, a better route selection would have probably helped.
These people went out on adventure. Too bad they were not as perfect as everyone posting in this thread.
Glad they are getting out of there. I think some of the criticism is the result of some hasty and unthought-out statements made on their blog. I read the jhnews article and blog before I saw this thread. When the blogger was talking about monetary losses, costs of fixing the truck, filling out paperwork for the cops/prosecution, I was just screaming in my head "get the fuck out of there." But, your friends are probably just really shaken up, and after first getting to a relatively safe spot, they had not yet made the mental transition from "this is really screwing up our trip" to "trip over, get home." Make sure whoever talks to them focuses them on getting out of there. Fuck their money, climbing gear, truck, and the trip itself. The guy needs new teeth, and he's not getting good ones in Peru.
americans are always shocked when "i'm from the u.s." doesn't fix everything.
Lo and behold...
Los campesinos los habrían confundido con abigeos.
Oh, yeah, that makes sense...upon seeing unfamiliar white faces in the village, naturally the first response of campesinos in coca country is "hey, those gringos are here to steal our cows!".......OK, even the journalists down in Lima don't want to tell the real story, probably because narcos kill annoying journalists like flies....get the fuck out!

I don't personally know these people in Peru. The way I read it was they were asking for help in a desperate situation-yeah, probably self-inflicted to a point. They had nothing but bloody clothes so the probably asked for some money for medical attention. Then, someone told them to write basically an insurance claim of what was lost in their incident report and they copied it over.
I'm making a big assumption here. I doubt the first thing on their minds is getting their iphone back. I'm guessing they want to get home, healed, maybe some new teeth and then they'll start putting things back together.
Tough crowd around here.
So a few ill prepared and naive kids go to Peru and get the crap kicked out of them by the natives. Reminds me of the time in college my friends and I got the crap kicked out of us and our stuff stolen late one night on the NYC subway by the natives. I don't recall saying we were from Westchester helped either. Unfortunately we never had the aftersight to post a blog and ask for donations.
I think you're hearing some more "local" type feelings. There isnt a season that goes by out here without a local fucking up doing something rad then getting handouts for med bills, etc and benefits being thrown (if you include this, there have been three "events" just in the past month and a half). I tend to support these ventures, but a lot of people, including a local news rag, are pretty against the practice.
I think them asking for it themselves was a step over the line for many people. Who gives a shit about your gear, get the fuck out of there and life will go on. Thats what matters. I can see both viewpoints.
Live Free or Die
everyone around here is soo fucking brilliant and worldly...even the jongs!
this has turned into another 'I'm the avi expert and look at the ways they fucked up'...please. so easy sitting at your computer.
White people will always think the natives are kinder than they are... When will the whiteys learn?
Don't Blame me, I voted for JoJo
I agree Adiron. Happens here to.
based on your posts your the fuckface stuck in a basement...fucking moron.
dear tgr "maggotry",
it pains me to write you this way, but i am still recovering from a vicious e-beating i could not have foreseen. i had planned to take several hours innocently wandering the internet typing my crdit card numbers into random websites when i encountered a seemingly harmless locale known as the "padded room." i did almost no research, but i could see that the locals were pastoral savages with far inferior intelligence, so i assumed just being me would be enough to get tons of their handmade goods dirt cheap (they're such suckers!)
well, to avoid tonto-izing an already boring story, those brutes attacked me relentlessly, stole my dignity and my anonymity.
i hate to ask, but as a result, i'm hopelessly stuck on the internet and my feelings are hurt. seriously. really badly. i value the things i lost here at roughly $10.4 million. if any of you good people would care to help out, it would be great to take a shower at a nice hotel, maybe get a mani-pedi and catch a show.
and rest assured, i will never make this mistake again!
i bought the bear bells instead. the guy behind the counter muttered something about bon appetit touron!
Glad for the three involved to see that things are moving forward...
Get home, heal, count your blessings and move on.
My wife and I are following this since we just spent 10 days in the area and had no issues.Even went day tripping by motorcycle through the villages.Nothing but friendly people around.
This was posted on the Newspaper opinions area and does make sense to me anyways.
Lets rework this into the first person from the other side; Some foreigners park their camper in your yard and ask to camp in broken english. Some trigger makes you suspicious of them it could be anything, alcohol, unruly behavior, excessive money. You call your local security (police or whoever) who comes and asks for their identification but they refuse and instead haul ass away from you down a street you know to be a dead end. All the neighbors show interest and next thing you know a mob as been created with one goal which is to apprehend these fugitives. The street is baricade, knowing they will have to come back. Great lengths are made to get them and they are injured while trying to flee. Finally they are apprehended and it is found that they have done nothing wrong. Meanwhile they have already been beaten, the village has barricaded a road and been bear sprayed all over a mistake. Everyone is mad and has their own opinions of what they want done. Maybe if you have them sign a form that says they did this to themselves the Government Police will not be so upset. Had this happened in the south side of Chicago or Queens or even in rural Wyoming, I don't the three of them would EVER have been found or heard from again. They should be counting their lucky stars.
