ultimately they don't give a shit what all of these people think about them enough to do anything so I don't know why you do.
I only chimed in because it looked like a witch hunt and VTsession is a local mag. I have no connection to the travelers nor have we ever met. Also, I am not against raising questions, but the innuendo was getting pretty negative... "If I see him, knock out his teeth" or, "fuck em up... torture their pets", etc:

That's the lynch mentality I referred to and what I feel was a little whacked. I am saying everyone take a step back, breath deep and take a minute to think.

It's clear to me, they were attacked while in Peru. They wrote about it, got lots of sympathy dollars, and continued on their trip. Now, there are even pictures that show them bloodied and marooned, confirming the story. I don't care what they did with the money. I seriously doubt you/me/they would willingly endure that beating again, even if promised double the amount. And who's to say what you would do with the dough... though personally, I would feel very weird taking a trip on someone else's dime.

I read through their blog and it looks like they had a great time. To do that takes some balls, money and lots of time. I can appreciate the effort such a trip may require, and part of me is jealous, as I believe are many others here. Seeing someone accomplish this is very cool, but also, maybe a reminder that few are able to do this. Idk.... It's a shame this has degenerated into an asshole contest, as the original intent of this thread was a genuine plea for help for a mag's relative in an ugly situation. Seems like there is a lot of jealousy/resentment directed towards them, since.

As far as you and anal sex, I'm just relying on what was written on Rontel's bathroom wall. Sorry if I'm spreading a false rumor, but I suggest you PM Rontel.

And Mike, the more I read your post, the more I think you were just kidding... Right?!

nah man, it just takes money. You know, how I'm a "trustafarian" because i did shit? There's no fucking jealousy from me, nor a bunch of other people who've done similar shit; that's lazy stupid bullshit on your part. Alot like the stupid "armchair" bullshit, because many of the people "armchairing" have done similar.

having been to Peru, their narrative as presented here and on their blog - especially with the nobody will help us in Cuzco lines - isn't really clear and the description of the "ugly" situation doesn't make sense. It pulls at the heart strings if you are ignorant or want to believe exagerations, but it doesn't make sense, and it didn't at the time to many people with far more experience in Peru than you or I.

Well, that's what I was asking you to do... tell me why you doubt this. I get that you don't think it makes sense, but how do you argue those pics? I'd love to hear your insights (and I am not being sarcastic).

Maybe they had a legit bad experience. You never did, but isn't it possible? I've been to Jamaica a ton, beaches, mountains, city, country and never had a problem. Even made many friends and still keep in touch. But there are people who go to Jamaica once and seem to have issues, so you never know.

I will feel pretty stupid if I am wrong, but based on all I've seen here, I'm not even close to convinced this was a scam.

imo, begging for money then continue "the dream trip" on caring folks dime is fucking weak. collect enough to limp home. heal up, and plan for another go at with their own hard earned or mommies dime.

maybe scam is the wrong word. maybe inconsiderate, self-entitled assholes do something else when they beg for money, make way more than they need and keep traveling by abusing said generosity.

Not gonna argue that... Like I said, personally, I wouldn't. But I know many "sponsored adventurers". That's between them and their donors.

So, despite being worthy enough to canvas for money, we aren't worthy to express any opinion? That's bullshit.

Look, if an asshole like me (that's the way you view it, I don't give a shit) can help and be helped, it's fucking impossible they couldn't have gotten home from Peru with their story, like they asked, without panhandling here and plenty of other places. They collected on the sob story, they then continued on their trip. Calling that "sponsored adventure" is bullshit. Telling everyone here that they are a horrible mean person - which you've done - because they don't see that as bullshit is fucked up.

BD, I hear you about giving them the benefit of the doubt, but that benefit ends when they come back with a bunch of the shit they say was stolen. Or inflate the value of things to the point of absurdity, like a 4k laptop.

Hugh, the innuendo was pointing towards the attack never happening and that this was all a put on. I assume you agree it did. Also, I'm not saying you are a horrible person and I was being sarcastic about "sponsored adventures". Obviously they aren't pros. I mean people who have inherited fat bank accounts, wealthy parents, friends, etc... NTTAWWT.

What you (and others) are saying, is it's an abuse of generousity and peoples goodwill. That is certainly a possibility. How they presented it, or what they promised in return for someone's assistance, is between them. I donated nothing more than my time and sympathy.

I'm just saying given what they went through, I think it's better to err in their favor. If you (or anyone else) gave them money, then it's your business to go over with them. As far as armchairing, that's kind of half of what TGR stands for. Arguing about it is the other half.

What did they go through? I don't think the incident was "faked" or a "put on" but I don't really see it happening exactly as described, and that's the only side of the story that was ever presented. Sorry, the poor me fundraising didn't make sense and frankly, other than the injuries, just seemed like clueless yuppie bitching. Oh poor dear, you had to wait for 3rd world beauracracies! If they don't want people talking, don't beg for money or do interviews.

Okay, I hear you on that. That's a reasonable question. I think ML said it earlier, they exaggerated their claims and the story is probably somewhat less than what's been presented. It doesn't do much for their credibility saying the laptop was worth thousands, either. Maybe that's if you buy it in Peru?

And I agree, reading some of their original letter, then looking at the pictures, raises a lot of questions. They claimed the surfboards were stolen, camper was trashed, etc. From the pics, you can still see some surfboards and the camper looks like it just popped opened on one side, but inside is a mess:

But the truck windshield is smashed from what look to be rock impacts,

    and his face is bloody:

But they don't look like they are in need of "hundreds" of stitches, either. I have no qualms about your questioning this shit, especially the deeper I dig. I don't know... doesn't look so cut and dry, but they definitely had a very rough experience.

We got EMTs on here who can probably opine about crash scene windshields and whether they tend to sometimes look like that. I can definitely state that the type of jack you see near the camper's back door is rather famous for removing the front teeth of inexperienced (or nighttime) users.

(Then there's the element of their story that includes "We signed/confessed to crashing" FWIW)
