I joined this forum to comment on this thread. I been living in the hole a long ass time. I came from the west not the east.
That is right I am here to jong, QB or whatever you want to call it.
These three folks fucked up in a big way. I have driven from Jackson to Panama twice, just me and my dog. I spent 4 months on the road the first time and all but 2 weeks of that was spent camping. All of Baja, all of mainland Mexico including the Mex200, and all of CA. The best advice in this thread comes from tommyvee, he knows exactly what he is talking about which any experienced traveler can easily tell.
I drove down in a nice truck, a real nice one. I had some gear in it too but not a lot other than the truck, some boats and some boards. I didn't take a laptop, a GPS or any of that crap, I wrote about the trip once I got home. Nobody gave me any gear or a super sweet camper before I left, I piad for it all on my dime. I had plenty of sketchy situations and was robbed. But I only was robbed by cops or officials and I wised up to that shit pretty damn fast. When the cops tried to frame me and then robbed me for well over a grand I didn't make some donations shit on the internet to help me out. When I was rear ended in San Salvador and had to pay to drive away I din't ask for no help. When I found myself stuck down south running out of cash, I sold my gear instead of calling home. Not once was I robbed by a local and only a few times did I feel cased out by any locals. I sat around one night drinking with some MS13 gangsters (not intentional) in El Salvador, these were the real deal, very sketchy characters with tats up on the face and shaved heads. Here I was, "in the wrong place at the wrong time" just having a taco and a beer on the street. They were cool to me because I respected them and didn't ask any stupid questions, I also showed them no fear. In fact I just talked to them like they were human beings without any thought of what they may have done before that conversation. I left my truck loaded up with gear on the streets on Belize (Dangriga) for ten days and had zero problem. Why because I made friends with the locals and was respectful to them. After a while they even took me around to some local music studios which I thought was a real treat, not just anybody gets invited there. I been to Colombia a lot too, seen people shot on the streets there and had a bomb go off a few blocks away from me that killed 11 people. Is it a sketchy way to travel, yes it is but it is also one of the best ways.
I met a very young dude while on the road in Baja hitchhiking from Oregon to Tierra del Fuego on next to no money. Three years later he is still on the road and is down in
Peru now. Not a single problem for him in all that time, he is a smart dude.
What is my point of flexing my e-peen? These folks fucked up, that is why. They also should be honest with the world about it since they made their story public and raised over 20grand. Which in my opinion was very premature and played off as needing help to get so and so and such and such. I can't say being ignorant deserves a beat down like they got but hell man wtf does it matter what I think about that I wasn't giving the beat down! I been down there in Latin America lot's, spent 7 months on the road living out of my truck during two trips and so ya I know something about it. You don't go uninvited into a village and if you do the first thing you ask is if it is ok to be there and then you offer a few bucks to camp well before any beers are cracked which you also make sure that is ok. Oh and BTW, it is not a good idea to get drunk with locals. Hell man if I was headed into one of these villages I would want to bring gifts of some sort, books, an old cell phone, anything would do. You also should know more about the local area and it's people then where the next best climbing route is. A few hours on the internet and I feel like I know vastly more than these folks did about
Peru and the Ocongate region they were in. A Presidente in these communities is a mayor and the police is made up from the community. Their justice system is swift and often harsh and the have the right by law to enact justice. Look it up for yourself and you will see they have been known to burn cattle rustlers at the stake. I have never once been asked by locals to see my docs but I carry copies of that shit, duh! It would appear odd to me if they did ask but ya know what, I seriously doubt I would have thought a bunch of villagers were going to steal my documents! And if they did, big fucking deal you can get new ones at the embassy real fast plus what kind of person goes to South America in their truck and doesn't have copies stashed back home? Once they showed up to camp and cracked beers and the community showed up the greet them, just bailing out wasn't really an option, they were required to explain themselves. Kind of the same thing up north here where us whities live. The window of opportunity they had to bail was if they knew where the hell they were going, very obviously they didn't, GPS fail!! On their blog they show obvious ignorance to the local peoples by commenting on how horrid they live without even trying to understand it. Very obviously they were ignorant and I am super surprised they made it 9 months without an incident. You also don't boondock camp unless you know it is safe which on their blog you can see they had been doing that a lot.
What sucks about these folks story is not just the beat down they took. Hey even though I think they fucked up it still sucks to lose some teeth over it. The story is also making people who travel by vehicle outside the USA looks like idiots and not because they took a beat down. I have a hard enough time showing locals down south I am not Cpt. Jackass American Tourist without stories like the Wolfrom's going around.
People do trips down the Pan Am all the time. The ones that are dumbasses have problems. The ones that aren't don't. Don't let this story stop you from going south in your own vehicle, it is a hell of a trip and I am hooked on it for sure. But don't go as an asshole from the USA. Spend as much time having fun as getting to know everything you can about local peoples, they have a lot to teach us ignorant white boys.
So my advice, pussies & dumb asses stay home. Don't take what you are not prepared to lose, including your truck and your dog. Piss off some locals and there will be hell to pay on your body and mind be sure of that! Who cares about your wallet or gear if you get out with your life! Oh and I dare some east coasters to come set up camp in my lawn without my permission, then when I come out with my gun, speak something other than english to me. When I ask you to show me who you are and you push me away and then bear spray me. Well, don't be surprised if I shoot your ass and call Teton County Sheriff afterwards! Oh and buy them a beer!? I would if I had more than $500 in the bank! I really would like to hear their story in person. Perhaps they can just do an presentation in town when they get home? With over $20k they got just barely enough to get the teeth fixed here in the hole so I can afford my own beers.
