Best way to find a lost Contour cam?

Just got a Roam 2 with 3 days on it. Had a bad knees to the face bail off of a big double stager and the camera was ripped off by my knee. Tried looking for it twice and no dice. There was a pretty good sluff coming down as I ate it so hard searching.

Thinking about renting a metal detector, it is a bit of a slog in on the sled but should be doable.

Any advice? Will a metal detector work on the limited metal (alu?)?

Mark the area off with flagging tape and head back out in the summer?

If you have access to a Recco searcher, it will pick it up.

    This is good to know.

This was my original thought. Good excuse for a summer day-hike?

summer will be pretty hard to get in compared to using sleds. Going to try and find a rental metal detector and put it on the cheetah rack.

Will a recco receiver really find a contour camera? Is this something specific to the contour? If not, what exactly is it picking up on?

So there are 2 types of metal detectors that I can rent. One is for ferrous metal only and will detect anything up to 4 ft.

The other is a precious metal and will only go to about 6" down. Any one a metallurgist? I emailed contour to see what they have in the inside as I am sure the outside is aluminum

Just tested a couple of detectors on my old contour and they only pick it up at about 6" away. I am thinking a metal rake will work better....? It was sluffing pretty good so I am sure it has set up over the week and we just got about 10cm on top of that.

    Yes it will.

It's the circuitry that reflects a signal.

There are previous threads of peoples cams being found using it.

Getting hold of a RECCO unit outside of one that has been donated by the manufacturer to a ski area might be more difficult than finding the camera unaided though?

Interesting. So You're saying someone with a cell phone in their pocket can be found with a recco receiver just as easily as a regular recco tag/reflector?

Sorry about the thread jack. To the op, I would skip the precious metal detector, and when you did your at home test, did you do it in an area with no other nearby metal or electro-magnetic signals? If not that would explain the six-inch range...

I've not used one, but my understanding is it'll work but it's not "just as good". Nerdery link:

NO! That is not entirely true. The Recco reflector is optimized for the system frequency, and thus gives a decent range for detection. Other electronic devices may or may not act as reflectors, and if they do they will normally have a reduced range of detectability.

Thanks for the link Hugh, I won't pretend that it isn't a ways above my weight class, but I learned some things.

I'm not saying it's as good, but let's be real, it's not a system with a ton of real world useful applications.

Found it! Super stoked. Used a collapsible tool that is used for building mtn bike trails, only took about 5 minutes of digging/searching. Too bad the last video clip won't work for some reason, it would have been a gooder

Trying, the last vid crapped out, either from my knee hitting the cam or maybe the battery/card dying while it sat there. It shows on the card but is not accessible.

It was about a 60ft+ combo to knee in face.
