Which FULL custom footbed do you use?

My old full customs are on the way out, been through three different boots and probably 500 days, just got a brand new pair of krypton pros to replace my old KPs, going to spend the coin on custom footbeds, i'm in my boots 120+ days a year, so the money is well worth it.

just wondering what you guys use: solefeet, surefoot, amfit? and what your definition of full custom is i suppose.... to me it's not off the shelf, it's molded in the shop and built from your mold up from the ground by the bootfitter, but maybe im missing something that is even more the tits than that? even more full custom?...

anyone with the surefoot ones compare it to the other brands?

searched around a bit... but not a whole lot on this.

Who forms it is probably a lot more important than what brand it is.

I have Instaprints and Superfeet corks. Both are great and, pertinent to the advice above, I made them.

I have Amfits which is the same system unit as Surefoot. As mtnlion says the who is more than the what in most cases. That is certainly true for Surefoot or Amfit. One thing I really like about the Amfit is the ability to place a heel wedge under the foot and scan with that correction already there gaining a lot of stability without impacting the midfoot.

I have superfeet corks fit by Cosmo. If you're anywhere near Tahoe, that's the spot to go.

    conformable built by me.

If the "who" is good, the "what" will be in part, determined by the "you". Different things work for different feet and people.

I am big fan of the custom Superfeet. I think the theory behind them makes sense. They get vacuum formed to the foot while it is unweighted. This just makes sense to me, as it means you are trying to support the foot in it's naturally strong position.

I have never been impressed with Surefoot. The skill level of their bootfitters seems so varied, and the hard sell approach they have in Verbier is just annoying. Also the idea of creating a footbed with a weighted foot, and then a bootfitter deciding what position to put it into does not seem as bio-mechanically sound to me.

Its all what works for you. I skied Superfeet full corks for 15yrs. in my race boots. IMO, it is a high performance foot bed which is also cold and somewhat uncomfortable. Now days, I'm all about the comfort fit. I wear a 27 instead of a 26 and just use trim-to-fit greens. I've got an easy foot to fit, so I'm lucky. My feet are warm, comfortable and I get as much performance as I need.

700+ days on surefoot amfits' and still super stoked on them. i would be super stoked to have a second pair of them so i don't have to switch between boots, but every other footbed i have used in the last 9 years has had some issue or another, so yeah... i'll just run them till their are dead in another 10 years.

made by tyler at surefoot keystone, but he is now in the NYC store.

Not sure of the brand, but i got them through a ortho/ pediatrist guru here in MN. Dude came out with a box of dense foam and had me imprint each foot in the foam, giving a full 3D imprint of my foot. They then took a 3D digital rendering of each foot and built up a cork/ foam/ rubber footbet that is very rigid on the bottom and supports my foot like nothing else. Not something you want to wear in shoes, as they do not fit in them very well. Ski boots are another story however, as it helps fill the veritcal space left by my skinny ankles. I only wear them in my ski boots and they have been going strong for 10+ years (2 pair)

For the past 20 years, I've bee using doctor made orthotics, and they work great.
    Plus insurance covers them.

Also running Comformable......also made by myself. The one's in the touring boots have much less arch support than the alpine set.

Whatever Bootsie makes at Inkline in Salt Lake. Love them.

By the way, how the hell do you make your own footbeds? You guys mean someone molds them for you and you do the finish work?

I used to work in a shop. I had someone help with positioning my feet (doing what I told them) but I did all the assembly and grinding.

Superfeet corks here, Ten years on the same set, switch them to hiking boots in the summer, so they get some use.

That said I use off the shelf superfeet in my touring boots and they work fine for me as well. I have pretty boring feet over all.

    pseudoscience.

too many variables and there's no good way to "try before you buy" so most people take what's made for them and canonize it. I think in reality, anything that takes up extra volume in an alpine boot makes it inherently more precise, and thus "ski better". Balancing that with all-day comfort is where the YMMV comes in. The foot/ankle and "normal gait cycle" that podiatrists/orthotists/md's are trained in doesn't happen in ski boots (as someone mentioned above)... for example, the whole bevel at the heel on a walking pair of orthotics is designed to promote normal side-to-side movement of the heel bone during heel strike and the loading phase of gait. Why would you need that in a ski boot? For proper mechanics walking from your car to the lifts?

I am a believer in maintaining your ability to make balance corrections to either side while locked up in a ski boot, so I don't feel like you should be maxed out in range one way or another.

I had Bill Peterson personally make me two pairs of custom footbeds in 1991. I swap them into (stiff-soled) cycling shoes for the summer, into my ski boots in the winter, and many thousands of days later, with only an occasional reapplication of the glue, they're still going strong. I've also worn multiple types of high end custom orthotics in my regular footwear over the years, but when I've tried them in ski boots they don't provide anywhere near the same level of power transfer and sensitivity, and I only get about 3 years life out of them at ~ $400 a pop. Sidas/Conformable continue to use the direct mold pillow orthotic system that Bill Peterson invented.
