Only chair 7 ran today at KW. Windy? Yes. Just started to snow at around 1:15pm when we bailed for SF. Snowy travel for quite a bit with the intermittent whiteout with a temp down to 23F. Traversed to Oops EP/Cave area from 7 with Schralp and had fun jumping icy cliffs.

^^^^^what other route would you take besides 50? Driving the west shore would be hairy, if open and 88 is way out of the way with two more passes. Oh, you mean from Marin to Sac.

I don't think it is crazy, but I've driven up in plenty of storms. I'd not wait for traffic to die down, bit head on our and suffer. It would suck to leave at 8, cruise up and have the pass close on ya.

What the hell is Schralph doing there? He is supposed to be getting me a jacket. So we can match.

My brother just drove up on 50 and said the biggest worry was not able to pass people using chains.

In general, how is 50 between SLT and Sac during storms? They pretty good about keeping it flowing if you've got 4wd? Going to be driving between SLT and Sac around New Years, maybe more than once, trying to plan.

KT Storm Day fun! KT spun the whole day, aside from a brief closure due to an evac. Flat light in the morning, but it started snowing around noon and it got more fun... Was a total white-out between 1-2pm, refills and then some on each lap, snow was super light.

Thanks for the beta powfiend, all those areas continued to ski well today and only got better as the day went on.

As long as the pass stays open, traffic can move. Once they close things down, it can take a while to open back up. But not typically more than a few hours.

As was stated above, the biggest concern will usually be getting stuck behind a caravan moving slowly. The road itself is not a difficult drive, and generally has good viability. That said, just plan on it taking time, and check for road closure before you leave. I think it is just over an hour and half drive when the road is dry, and clear of traffic. With storms and holiday traffic the same drive can be four hours plus.

    Can definitely attest to that.

One other thing to watch out for is you can be on the freeway and it may get shut down with you being on it, so make sure you plan for that as well.

It was a bit of a clusterfuck driving home from Squallywood. SR 28 in Tahoe City was not moving for about 1/4 hour (I had my car in Park) and then 431 was closed due to fatal MVA. I passed about 4 cars spun out into various ditches and snowbanks on from Squaw back to Galena Forest area.

Normally my plan is a bit of rest and an early am departure, but looking at the sky and the hourly forecast graphs it appears toughing out the Fri might traffic is your best move. Heavy snow looks to roll in around 4am.

I'll sit out the winds and plan for Monday.

Sinecure's GPS was telling him to do that, then head up 28 to drop folks in North Lake. I suggested that it was on the fritz, and he agreed. Sorry, Sinecure.

Well, at 6500' in Alpine, this storm has underproduced so far. But the radar suggests that trend will not continue.

Still hardly anything going on in souf lake ... This storm is surely enjoying the fine dining of Tomales Bay oysters or something ... Get thee to the mountains!

    I recant that.

Now snowing sideways and the trees are dancing here at south lake. Given the forecast ... Not looking like too many lifts will spin down here.

Note that SAC is calling out red rating below treeline for slopes steep enough to go.

Anybody want to share Heavenly Beta? I normally resort ski at Mt. Rose and have had a Heavenly pass in the past but like five years ago so a little rusty on the terrain. Basically I am a off piste skier only interested in skiing trees and areas off the grid. I do know most of the trad areas like Mott, Killabrew trees North woods ect ect. I am interested in skiing the Burn area and how to contour it back to the Gondola. So anybody want to share? Thanks Quad

Yep one of the fastest Friday night escapes from the Bay area I've ever had, everyone was on Holiday already I guess. Quite the blustery day right now, just saw a Kirkwood report on TV, there pushing there cross country offerings today.
