    GEAX Tires

What are people's thoughts on GEAX mtb tires? They're made by Vittoria who is the largest bike tire manf. mostly for road bike tires. How's their quality, tread design, compounds? Anyone riding on GEAX tires that can chime in here?

I run Geax AKA on my DJ. Would go back to a small block 8 next. These wear really fast and are pretty squirmy even on their intended terrain.

I really like my Lobo Mas Loco 2.5.
True 2.5, big ass lugs, at a reasonable weight.

Put a Gato on front and a Saguao on back for my wifes bike. American classic rim with gorilla tape and stans valve stems (not the goofy ass stans kit). Stans sealant. Set up super easy. She loves them.

I'm a real man and only ride Nevegals, so I can't speak to Geax personally.

edit: Non TNT version 'cause I heard they were harder to set up tubeless on AC rims and they're heavier.

I dig my AKA 29" I rode it through a nasty deep swamp today. On everything but wet roots I continue to be impressed.
But Ellen kicks ass - if she had a beard it would be much more haggard. -Jer

I've been running Geax Sturdy 2.25 Kevlars as my front for a few years. I love 'em! They work great for the loose & sandy summer conditions in Tahoe. Nice long life & super easy setup with Stan's.

I run the Gatos 2.3" front and rear in the TNT tubeless version. The only tubeless tire I could get to sit properly on the rim without using a compressor fwiw.

They provide excellent grip (traction and breaking wise) in any condition - particulary wet - on any terrain and still roll very decent. Imagine a Schwalbe Nobby Nic with WAY better grip. My favourite allround tire so far, would take them over any Schwalbe or Conti. The TNT version is indestructable.

On my hardtail I'm currently running regular 2.3 Barro Mountains but set them up tubeless as well. They are a bit narrower than the Gato. Roll excellent, a fast tire for mainly dry conditions with a little more grip/profile than a Saguaro. Has it's limits when it gets soaking wet though.

Also ran an AKA TNT 2.3 - excellent roller too, great on rocky or firm terrain. It is not so much at home in the dirt which I'm riding most of the time, that's why I swapped them in favor of the ones above.

I have a Mezcal on the back and a Saguaro on the front of my 29 rigid SS; really pleased with both, but more impressed with the Mezcal. The Saguaro seems a tad squirmy, but likely due to the excessively dry conditions we've had lately. Would buy a Mezcal again, maybe pair it with a Maxxis Aspen up front next time.

Reading this thread shows another reason to buy Geax.
Coolest model names in the business.

Read somewhere that it's pronounced G-axe.

Some good reviews here. It sound like GEAX makes good tires.

Ned is right...It's pronounced G-axe. They're a major sponsor at Highland's Claymore Challenge. They seem to be getting a lot of good buzz lately. I'll have to try a set.

Ned's right on the pronunciation; it is G-Axe. It kills me, because I suspected it'd be "go" - a 'la Cajun French. A few contacts that work for them have all corrected me. When I mentioned that it's a shame their tire company has an odd name rather than "GO!", they all seemed disappointed. I honestly couldn't believe I truly got the impression they hadn't heard it before. (typically when you speak with someone representing a company, especially when you are claiming a failure of their product, the response seems to always be, "huh, never heard of that happening before." Right.)

Anyway, again just reiterating that I've been pleased with my Geax experience, and will likely buy more rather than riding a few freebies I have in the basement that I'm not quite as excited about...

Geax Sturdy is rad. High volume, long wearing, good grip. Just wish they made a 2.5.

has anyone run the Datura or synapse? both seem to be available for low prices, and the datura would rule for the sandy winter conditions we get around here.

Try the Lobo mas Loco 2.5.
True 2.5 size with big ass lugs, digs in like a tractor.
This thing is a monster but it still weighs under 1000 grams. Very respectable considering the Sturdy 2.25 is around 900 grams.

They seem to have comparable compound offerings also.
