Thanks. No response even when on the charger. The port is clear. I try and keep pictures and contacts away from google although doing so is almost certainly futile.
Thanks. No luck, unfortunately.
Already got that new new Pixel 5.
Have you tried plugging it in for a few minutes then booting in recovery mode? I want to say it's power and both volume buttons for 30 seconds but it might be a minute. I remember needing to do that a couple times and whatever the instructions online seemed to be a bit shorter than what was needed.
Plugging in makes the battery warm like the phone is charging but no combination of button pressing or holding I've tried does anything. Called a shop today and it's $50 to attempt recovery and another $100 if successful.
I'll try it for $49
Sorry if this has been addressed in this thread already, but any thoughts on the Pixel 9? Verizon is offering my wife a free one, so I'm wondering if it's a POS. Thanks
Lost my Pixel 5 in Hawaii in August, pre-ordered the 9 Pro. Realized I can't really do my job without a functioning phone, bought another Pixel 5 cheap off amazon as a stand-in/future backup.
I have carried both for the past week. My thoughts:
1) Battery life is very good. Like almost 2 days good (medium use)
2) The AI optimization is a crock of shit. Gemini still runs mostly in the cloud and you can download it to any phone including my Pixel 5. You get the same answers slightly quicker on the 9.
3) Camera: Yes, it has more megapixels, but they both use computational photography tools to achieve roughly the same effect. The 5x zoom is nice. I guess. I'm going to be honest: I'm a control freak when it comes to my photos and I hate Google's approach favoring CP over hardware specs. White-balance, the artificial auto-bokeh, it just doesn't hold up to close scrutiny like a galaxy or an iPhone. There is a "pro-mode" but some of these CP tools are always on.
4) It has a (?FLIR) thermometer!. Neat. The only use cases I have found are confirming that my coffee is indeed hot, and that my refrigerator did indeed shit the bed.
5) P9 now has a modem with satellite SOS connectivity, meaning it could -potentially- supplant a Garmin in-reach (Save you $40/mo on the sub). I would have to think long and hard before I decide to trust the thing and leave my Garmin at home.
6) It is a -chonk- of a phone. You will want a case because the camera bump on the back is awkward without it, making the thing borderline uncomfortable in your pocket. But then again the iPhone is about the same dimensions, so maybe the alternative isn't much better.
Anyway. That's what I got. I'm hesitating to send it back in because it's shiny and I don't want to admit that for the first time a new shiny gadget did not drastically improve my life. But that's the truth. But if it were free? Sure, it's a fine phone.

I really appreciate the feedback. Honestly I don't think my wife would like it. She is not a sophisticated phone user, so new features wouldn't really benefit her. I think she should stick with what she knows, i.e. Samsung middle-of-the-road phones like the A54.
God dammit, Just as I was warming up to going back to a "larger" phone from my 13 mini in exchange for the 3rd camera of an iphone pro...Apple makes the 16 pro models even bigger. It is marginal but still...
Maybe I should just go back to a Pixel now that they would be almost the same size and the Pixel would get the satellite SOS feature I'm interested in.
I'd have to give up on my Apple Watch, which I have enjoyed, but I much prefer the Pixel photography experience so that's OK.
Looking for recommendations for an iPhone 15 case. Work just replaced my iPhone 6 that they gave me in 2015. My understanding odd that the iPhone 15’s are more durable. I use it for everything, including in the field. Don’t want a huge case and don’t want to spend too much
I'm partial to Spigen rugged armor.
Apple has more or less the same exact satellite SOS feature. Switching between OS is a PITA. All the phones are good. Always surprises me when people move around.
focus.
I’ve used the Lifeproof case on every phone I’ve had for the past 15 years. Otterbox bought the company apparently, but the Lifeproof Fre has been a solid case - waterproof, drop “proof”, etc. ive beat the hell out of some phones and they look brand new when you take off the case.
I’m gonna order an IPhone 16 pro tomorrow, mostly to upgrade the camera from my 12. Trip to Italy in a few weeks, I’d like to take some nice photos. I definitely don’t care about the AI features tho.
My hot take is that unless you need "waterproof" which is questionable, the Otter/Lifeproof style multi piece clamp together type cased suck. Over time, dust defeats the gaskets, the little plastic clamps break and the image quality suffered as the screen protector get scratched.
Consider one the dense rubber cases, a high quality Gorilla Glass type screen protector, buy the insurance, sweep the leg and walk away. I'm a contractor and use my phone in all types of outdoor situation for phones, navigation etc. This method is the go to.
I think the key is using the MagSafe charger and not opening and closing the charging port at the bottom all the time. They also changed the camera lens cover part to gorilla glass, so I haven’t noticed poor image quality in the last few cases. I do replace the case about every other year, but it makes my phones last several years or until the battery starts going.
I own a landscaping company, and I’m constantly emptying mulch/stonedust/dirt out of my pockets and my phone lives in my pocket. We also deal with irrigation systems, and work in the rain, so the waterproofing is a nice bonus.
My requirements for a phone case include port covers. And a metal plate in the back for magnetic phone holders.
My switch from android to IOS was pretty smooth honestly. I assume going back would be fairly smooth (other than the apple watch).
Although I will say that access to airdrop and imessage has been really nice. I hate them conceptually (stupid vendor lock-in), but most of my friends and family are on IOS so imessage "just works"...and that mostly excites me because it doesn't fuck up image quality when sending pics/vids. Airdrop is also just fantastic for things like skiing/riding with random people and being able to easily exchange pictures/videos.
My work-related need to switch to IOS has mostly gone away so I'm free to transfer back...agree that both are good. Either would serve my daily needs and there are things I miss about Android and other things I would miss about IOS if I switched back.
Interesting. I've been on a pixel for years and have considered going to IOS because of some quirks with pixel quality and curious how the photos compare. But, I hate how Apple intentionally doesn't play well with others and no desire to join the apple ecosystem. Guess I'm stubborn.![]()
