Expired Gu... to use or not to use.

Ok... so I was clearing out my gear closet, and found three boxes (150 packets total) of expired gu gel. (expired June of 2008). The responsible part of me says to just throw this away, but the cheap side of me says to use them up.

So, I need the advice of the collective... would you use it?

I've eaten gu's from '05 and been just fine. shit's got expiration dates on it for the same reason your oxy prescription has it... NOT because it's not going to work anymore.

That being said, I turned down a can of chili that was 7 years past due this week.

    maybe for training only?

wouldn't want to find out in the middle of an expensive race that there's a reason for the expiry!!!

If I based it on taste, I'd have to say that every one of the Gu packs I've eaten must have been expired.

I'll test them for you, but I probably won't have a definitive conclusion until I make it through about 144 of your 150 packets (so a dozen big tours).

haha. Thanks for the kind offer.

Well, it has been a few hours. No strange side effects to mention. Looks like I found my gu supply for the year.

Send them to me in new Zealand and I'll sell them. They go here for about five bucks each, retail. And it's ten bucks for a single pack of chews.

Yikes! That is insane. Why don't people just make their own?

From what I understand, Gu metabolizes faster than solid food, which is advantageous for aerobic, long-distance events.

I can't stand it anymore. Buddy and I bailed on a alpine rock climb in the Cascades, and the bugs were so bad we just wanted to get the fuck out. Decided to race the setting sun and hike the "18 miles" out of there. Turns out, we misread the map on the way in by ~7 miles, so we ended up hiking 25 miles in 6 hours (with a 30lb pack), 12 of which we did in ~2 hours. (I'm sure that's cake for the marathon crowd here, but it was hard for both of us.) Ate like 12 GUs over the course of the hike/run. Three years later and I still can't stand the stuff.
