    Howard Schultz: How to Make Coffee at Home

    Boy, this is going to piss off the coffee geeks.

    "I get up at 4:30 every morning to walk my three dogs and work out. Around 5:45 a.m. I make coffee for myself and my wife, using an 8-cup Bodum French press. This is the absolute best way to make coffee at home. Brewing coffee traditionally does not extract the oils, flavor, and essence of blends or a single varietal. The French press brings out those flavors. It’s a more robust or, in lay terms, a muddier cup of coffee. I use a coarse grind of aged Sumatra. Don’t buy preground coffee. After it’s opened, a bag of whole bean coffee has a shelf life of no more than a week. Store it in an airtight container on your counter, away from heat, sunlight, and moisture. Put approximately two tablespoons of coffee per cup in the glass beaker. Let your filtered water reach a rolling boil before you pour it in. After the water and coffee steep for three to four minutes, stir it to make sure the grinds are wet and submerged. Then press the coffee down. I never add milk to my French press, absolutely no milk. And since the French press should not be on a burner, transfer the coffee to a thermos. Drink it within an hour or two, at the max. You’ll have the best cup of coffee known to mankind.     I don't see anything there that would piss of coffee geeks, I'd bet most of them would agree that french press and fresh grind are a great way to make good coffee.

    Sorry he is the CEO of a coffee and lame ass "culture" providing corporation, that has indoctrinated the masses into thinking starbucks is the best coffee evar.

    And there are still lots of small rosters out there that do sell damn fine coffee. To me starbucks runs with the same strategy for coffee that Australian Shiraz producers use for wine, if it is mediocre to bad cover it up with a stronger flavour (burnt or sugar for starbucks, oak for wine) and then tell people that is how it should taste until they believe you.

    I don't think many (any?) people have been 'fooled' into thinking it is the best ever. I think most people see it for what it is (the best brew available within walking distance of terminal Gate G4, or the truck stop in Peoria). It is often tons better than the local chi-chi shop, but usually there are a few locals that kill it, but often people are traveling, and just looking for something consistent and convenient. Starbucks fits that bill. Most people that hate on Starbucks are too young to remember what coffee in the US really meant pre- 1985. In general, it was fucking AWFUL, unless you went to Italian restaurants or French patisseries. Some espresso existed in major urban areas, but certainly not in the airport!
    All that said, I am not a fanboi, I always have tried to find the local killer roaster/pression, but it's not always easy, cheap ( or always great).
    I invested in Starbucks in 1992, with a tiny bit of money. It paid for my first business, down payment on a house, and then some. So there you go.

    Yeah but, he's got his thing to the point that, when, I am cruising by a sign that says, Stahbux, 1.5, on the interstate in the middle of bumbfuck, I can depend on having in my cup holder soon the same iced venti mocha I get on the streets of NYC a month before. And it's good.

    Best coffee I've ever had comes from Stumptown. At home I followed their directions and it makes a pretty mean cup...

    I prefer my siphon to the press pot, though it is much tricker to use and requires a lot of practice before you get good results.

    Beat me to it. Also Intelligentsia and PT's are fantastic roasters. We're lucky enough in SLC to have Cafe D'Bolla, who is as good as any of the previously mentioned roasters if not better. Seriously, if you're in SLC, go there and get a cup of their siphon brew, its fucking incredible.
    All I know is that I don't know nothin'... and that's fine.

    I always thought I hated chardonnay, until I tried an unoaked one. I was happy.

    let us get back on topic to my displeasure with h. schultzit.

    in seattle, lighthouse roasters are the standard that others have strived to match. phinney location is a roasters mecca and sippers dream.

    And regarding cheap Aussie Shiraz: not all of it sucks. Know what you're buying.
