Vail native & professional snowboarder Brandon Reid took home the title of "King of the Mountain" at Thompson Pass, Alaska near Valdez this Thursday. Along with winning a massive sword worthy of a king, he also took home $10,000 cash, the biggest prize for any big mountain event around the world. The event was the finale of the two week Tailgate Alaska festival on the pass, supported by Flow Snowbarding.
Riders were responsible for getting themselves to the top of Bro Bowl by snowmobile on the first day for qualifying. Eight men & four women moved on to finals, rewarded with helicopter rides to the top of the venue. Brandon threw a massive backflip early in his run off a 25 foot cliff, reverting stylishly & riding a rocky spine down to another 20 foot air. He then made quick work of the rest of the venue with strong, fast turns in great snow conditions, airing over a patch of rocks and making one last massive heelside turn to finish arena.
The judging was done by the riders themselves that evening as they watched video of the runs, ensuring fairness from the riders who understood the intricacies of the face they had just ridden. The results came in with Reid on top, Sammy Luebke as runner-up, and Emily Weir taking home the win for the ladies.
The win caps off the best season yet for Reid, who was also the champion in Crystal Mountain, WA this February at the North Face Masters big mountain snowboarding event. He plans on exploring the Chugach mountains for the rest of the season, with "no return date planned". The allure of Alaska is hard to leave for a true mountain man like Brandon, now he has the cash to keep the dream alive. And a huge sword to fend off the grizzlies.
