Anyone here versed in Hydraulic system design?

    Need help with a project:

    -Single acting cylinder
    -ramping (programmable?) pressure
    -Timed hold

Sounds simple when I type it out, but hydraulics is not a strong point of mine and I am kinda buzzed and likely missing some key point at the moment.

I took a couple fluid power courses in college. I can't remember any of it but I still have the texts.

Sounds like a pressure/timer controls system issue far more than a hydraulic issue.

Bingo. I can (and already have, in a different application) easily set up a cylinder, pressure regulator and directional valves.

What I need for this system is:
    • -Upwards of 80 tons of force at the cylinder (would like to run at the lowest pressure possible for safety, but without spending $$$ on a HUGE cylinder)
    • -Pump
    • -Flow regulator to slow the system (without creating excessive back pressure, heat and noise)
    • -Directional control valve that can be controlled by either a computer interface (have a NI DAQ board available) OR a programmable Process controller (Watlow?). I prefer the process controller.
    • -Limit switches to control cylinder travel (might not be needed if the pressure setting stalls the system out)
    • -Possibly the ability to interconnect safety switches, would be nice to reverse the travel in certain emergency situations. (Simple solution is for safety switches to cut all power to the system, but this does not reverse the cylinder)

I think that is about it, sounds pretty simple to me, just don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it at the moment. I've had a few quotes worked up for this type of thing and the cost is $25K and up...

I'm sorry, I don't see your question anywhere in this.

Sounds like you just need some valves, a PLC, and some simple code, but maybe I'm missing something.

^^^What valves, what PLC and what code?

I need some help putting the components in my list together and having everything play nice early on. Basic hydraulics I can figure out (even though I've never taken a course in them), its the control side that I have no clue...

    Bump...

Anyone able to help? Might be able to make it worth your while, need to check with the bosses though.

Who's writing the code? That will probably dictate what PLC (brand) you select. Any major brand would have a basic PLC capable of this.

I'm a jong with PLC's, but so far I've had good luck with the Wago (or Beckhoff) fieldbus controllers. They're programmed with the IEC 61131-3 standard, which is a bit different than a lot of the other major brands (AB, Siemens, Omron, etc), but I like because it's relatively transferable between platforms.

    I would probably:
    1) Call your local hydraulics supply house, get one of their sales guys out and have them size up the pump/valves/cylinder with you.
    2) Take that list of components and then call your local PLC supplier to get one of their sales guys out.
    3) Profit?
