I must hope that the plans that were newly okayed took into consideration protecting the plant from seizemic activity in light of Japan's nuclear disaster. Granted, the plant in Japan and the proposed plants in Georgia are of entirely different design, but the plant in Japan was thought to be very safe BEFORE that quake.

I would like to see more research money invested in fusion research...we've got to step that up!!! They are making some excellent advances in fusion technology, but are working on "fairly" small budgets given the research that must yet be completed. The past "Cold Fusion" fiasco gave fusion research a black eye in the view of some of the public, unfortunately.

That would be awesome but "Cold Fusion" if possible is a huge threat to the Oil and Power Plant Industry. Can't see them giving up their Monopolies.

I don't think anyone's working very seriously on cold fusion. The big projects I've read about involve figuring out how to initiate and sustain a stable fusion reaction. It takes a lot of energy input to start the reaction, but if it can be managed and maintained you'll end up getting a lot more out than was initially put in.

Right. How many people were killed at 3 mile island? How many people got cancer and died?

More people have died falling off windmills and solar panels.

These things are going to be even more awesomer when we get some deregulationz and only market forces containz the radioactivity.

Really? Falling off solar panels...that's Enviro-Nazi funny stuff !

    Riddle me this;
How many people have to vacate their homes PERMANENTLY, because of windmills and solar panel contamination ?

In Superman 3 I think they sent it into space to kill an asteroid. I think the plan is similar to that.

let me guess you were able to interpret my stating "if possible" as my absolute belief it can happen ?

Turns out, the "worst case" sitcho at 3 mile island wasn't very dangerous at all.

Faaaaarrrrrrr more people have been killed at railroad crossings by coal loaded trains.

    Don't be a chicken little.

.... However, under the Obama Administration[2] funding for development of Yucca Mountain waste site was terminated effective with the 2011 federal budget passed by Congress on April 14, 2011. The US GAO stating that the closure was for policy not technical or safety reasons.

How many people have been forced from their homes PERMANENTLY by reservoirs of hydro electric power dams?

How many people have drown in those reservoirs?

A direct hit from a solar x flare could knock out our entire power grid giving us only as much time as the diesel generators have fuel. The generators are the back up cooling systems and when they run out meltdown begins average time in fuel at US nuclear plants <24 hours.
But Ellen kicks ass - if she had a beard it would be much more haggard. -Jer

I'm of the opinion that there is a nuclear reaction happening right now 93,000,000 miles away and there should never be one closer.

True for older designs. Modern designs use a gravity driven backup cooling system. It's a passive system that doesn't require an external power source.

You might need to move; naturally occurring nuclear reactions happen on this planet.

    Kinda yes.
You made think of Brazil and China's major Hydro Electric Dams and the eco-human cost.
Generating Electricity on a huge scale always has some consequences.

You can hit closer to home than that - Alcan's hydro project in the interior... give them a weeks notice (for the water level to be above the village) and as the water rises and they walk away burn the villages to the ground. Granted they were only indians.

Fukinsheman's big failure was that it was so safe almost all of the safety standards and procedures (regarding major accidents) were neglected and/or ignored to the point that they really didn't have a functional response plan (kinda like not needing life boats on a certain unsinkable ship). That coupled with their primary emergency command post being located withing the primary exposure area created a massive fuck up.

New nuke is the only practical solution for "green" energy.

    - what's gonna happen when all them solar panels cause the sun to go super nova, and why is nobody bringing this issue up? Come on DBT you gots some friend in that hillbilly religious nut job party that could speak to this.
I don't work and I don't save, desperate women pay my way.
