    Locking the Dynafit Toe?

So, I've been searching and reading about the Dynafit toe pieces and there's a lot of varying information out there. It seems the conventional wisdom is to lock the toe by pulling the lever up towards ninety degrees when in walk mode. What exactly is the advantage of this? It seems a release would be very unlikely while skinning. I just mounted the new 11/12 Speed Radical and the lever has several "clicks" or positions between when the front pins snap into the boot inserts and when it feels like it's topped out. Anyone know why? Is there any reason to ski or walk in the in between clicks? Thanks.

Release is more likely during skinning. Toured much? The torque put on the bindings while side hilling and kick turning is much more immense than in downhill use.

No clue why there's so many clicks. I just pull it all the way back.

Not to mention that when in touring mode, the heel isn't holding your boot in. The heel is the part of the binding that actually has any resistance to release. Your skis will quickly remind you if you forget to lock the toes. Guaranteed to step out of the binding in the first 20 steps.

If not the first 20 steps, at the first uphill kick turn. Pull it up as far as it can go without stressing the lever - two or three clicks for the Radical, three or four for Vertical/Comfort/Speed. Often you will be able to get another click or so after the bindings wear in a bit. There are people who use a "partial" (or full) lock for skiing, sometimes, but the party line is to ski with the toes fully unlocked.

It's not "conventional wisdom" It's the result of Reading TFM.

Just try walking w/o locking out the toe and you'll see why it's advisable to lock it.

Some people add a click or two in ski mode for a little bit of unquantified extra DIN.
